Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Cold with sunshine and showers, turning wetter and windier next week

A chilly few days ahead with showers, some of them heavy and a risk of frosts overnight. Signs of a change next week as the weather has the potential to turn more unsettled, thanks to the jet stream developing overhead. There is a risk of strong winds and heavy rain at times.

Holiday Monday 03/05/21
A deep area of low pressure is expected to be passing eastwards through the British Isles on Monday. This brings strong winds and rain, heavy at times. The focus for most of the rain is likely across southern and western areas while the Scottish mountains could see heavy snowfall for a time. The far north of Scotland may stay dry. Highs at 5 or 6C in the north, more widely 9 to 13C.

Tuesday 04/05/21
Low pressure remains close by on Tuesday, pulling away to the east. This draws in a chilly northerly air flow. Showers, some wintry, affect northern coasts and hills of Scotland and Ireland. Elsewhere it's a mostly bright day though a small area of low pressure develops later bringing rain to the far south of Ireland. Highs at 7C in the north, 12C in the south.

Wednesday 05/05/21
A small area of low pressure tracks across the southern half of the UK bringing gusty winds and outbreaks of rain to much of Wales and England. A brighter day for Scotland and Ireland with scattered showers here. These mainly to the northwest. Highs at just 5 to 11C.

Thursday 06/05/21
Low pressure to the north with weak fronts pushing eastwards. This brings some periods of patchy rain and gusty winds to many. Good spells of sunshine for many. Highs around 7 or 8C to the north, more widely 10 to 13C.

Friday 07/05/21
A transient ridge of high pressure brings a cool, dry and fine start to the British Isles. Low pressure arrives to the southwest of the region later bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Highs range from 8 to 14C.

Saturday 08/05/21
Low pressure spreads across Ireland and much of the UK bringing widespread strong winds and heavy bursts of rain. Perhaps staying dry to the far north of Scotland. Highs range from 7 to 12C.
