Turning cold
Wintry showers

Issued: 0900 Friday 2nd April 2021
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

The settled conditions make way for a cold blast of air pushing in from the Arctic next week. Expect some snow and overnight frosts and ice.

We lose this high pressure to a colder Arctic blast of air moving in from Sunday into Monday where snow is likely to fall, particularly further north. Strenghtening winds for some and blustery showers, some wintry, are expected through the week, before the signs of higher pressure tries to build back in again at the weekend.

Easter Monday 5/4/21
A much colder day for all on Monday with a sharp early frost expected across Scotland into northern England. A band of rain, followed by sleet and snow to mainly the higher ground but could fall to lower levels in the north, will push southwards down the country overnight Sunday and into Monday. Through the day expect sunny spells and showers, these will be wintry in nature for many, particularly in the north. The showers will be most frequent across northern Scotland. Highs at 2 to 6C.

Tuesday 6/4/21
High pressure west of Ireland with low pressure to the east will bring a brisk, cold northerly wind to particularly northern and eastern areas where the chill factor will be considerably felt. Showers will also be prevalent, these falling as sleet and possibly snow for some, heaviest and most persistent across northern and central Scotland again as well as the hills. Highs around 3 to 7C.

Wednesday 7/4/21
Another chilly day on Wednesday. Sunshine and some showers about, these again are likely to fall wintry, snow over higher ground and towards the north. A brief ridge of high pressure is expected to build in from the southwest and push eastwards seeing showers largely die out for a brief time across parts of England and Wales. Although, the next low pressure system moves in from the Atlantic bringing rain as well as strengthening winds to northern and western areas during the afternoon. Highs at 6 to 10C.

Thursday 8/4/21
Through Thursday the low pressure system will track eastwards into the North Sea. As it does so it will pull the winds round again towards a northerly direction. Expect heavy showers or longer spells of rain, sleet and snow across northern and eastern parts of Scotland as well as brisk winds. Elsewhere, expect a day of sunny spells and blustery showers, these showers largely affecting more coastal areas. Highs at 3 to 10C.

Friday 9/4/21
Friday will be another chilly and blustery day with sunny spells and showers about. These showers heaviest and most persistent towards the north and west as well as down coasts. Highs at 3 to 8C.

Saturday 10/4/21
There are signs that high pressure could build back in across the country at the weekend. This would continue to blow cooler northerly winds with possible showers down eastern coasts of England and Scotland. Largely dry elsewhere with light winds but also the risk of mist and fog developing in places. Highs at 3 to 10C.
