Frequent rain and hill snow

Happy New Year! The first week of 2022 brings an unsettled mix of weather, with periods of heavy rain, showers and some snow - mostly on the hills, but sometimes to lower elevations. Often windy with gales some days.

Tuesday 4/1/22
Much uncertainty in forecast detail, but an area of low pressure is due to move across England and Wales, bringing a threat of heavy rain and gales to southern regions. As this system engages with cold air along its northern edge, some areas of central-northern England and north Wales may see snowfall to low elevations for several hours. Further north over Scotland and Ireland it will be less windy with sunshine and some snow showers in the north. Highs 0 to 3C north, 5 to 8C south.

Wednesday 5/1/22
A ridge of high pressure builds overnight and into Wednesday bringing a dry and frosty start to the day. Cloud increasing from the west later as a warm front moves in from the Atlantic bringing rain preceded by snow over Northern Ireland and the Scottish hills, perhaps only arriving by evening or night. Highs 2 to 7C.

Thursday 6/1/22
A windy day for all with gales to the north and west. A front with rain on it will push southeastwards across the country, likely for some snow on the preceding edge. Drier and brighter behind though some blustery showers about. Highs 4 to 10C.

Friday 7/1/22
Another windy but largely dry day in central and eastern regions, although some frequent and heavy showers across north and west Scotland, falling as a mix of rain, sleet and snow. Highs 4 to 9C.

Saturday 8/1/22
Windy again with rain, sleet and snow through north and west Scotland. Sunshine and showers elsewhere. A brisk wind will feel particularly chilly. Highs 5 to 10C.

Sunday 9/1/22
Another unsettled day with low pressure nearby. Areas of rain and hill snow, heaviest and most persistent in the west. Windy, risk of gales. Highs 4 to 8C.
