Becoming drier
Staying cool

Issued: 0900 Friday 7th January 2022
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Cool, unsettled start, becoming drier but rather cloudy and murky

A cool week ahead. Unsettled at first, but then higher pressure builds bringing drier conditions. However, it is likely to be staying dull with mist and fog and a risk of overnight frosts. Temperatures are likely to be around average for the time of year.

Monday 10/1/22
Higher pressure over southern and eastern areas of the country brings a fairly cloudy day with morning mist and fog patches. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle in Scotland and Northern Ireland as well as northwest England. There may be some drizzle and low cloud affecting southern and southwestern coasts of England too. Temperatures at 5 to 7C but 10C only western coasts and around 10 to 12C in Ireland.

Tuesday 11/1/22
A weak front trails through England and Wales as well as the south of Ireland on Tuesday. This brings cloud and much drizzle and patchy rain. Hill and coastal fog is likely. Perhaps brighter in Northern Ireland and much of Scotland as well as the far north of England. Some drizzle and cloud in the far northwest of Scotland. Highs at 5 to 7C for most, 11C in southwest England.

Wednesday 12/1/22
High pressure over southern areas of Ireland and the UK on Wednesday. There will be some mist and fog patches again through England, Wales and Ireland. Plenty of cloud is possible with some drizzle on hills. More persistent rain in northern and western Scotland, some of this heavy over western facing slopes. Breezy in Scotland too. Highs at 6 to 8C.

Thursday 13/1/22
High pressure stays to the south again on Thursday. Breezy with some drizzle in north and west Scotland. Dry for most other areas with a fair amount of cloud. The best of any brightness in northeast England. Some mist and fog in southern and central England and Wales. Highs at 9C in any sunshine, more generally 5 to 7C.

Friday 14/1/22
High pressure builds west of Ireland on Friday. The flow turns more northwesterly. Some wintry showers in northern and eastern Scotland, perhaps opne or two over north coasts of Wales too. For most the day should be brighter and cooler. Highs at 4 to 6C.

Saturday 15/1/22
High pressure builds over Ireland and the UK on Saturday. Mist and fog may be more widespread and may linger in some places through the day. However, it should clear from others, probably the east being best. Highs at 4 to 6C.
