Wet and windy to start 2023, generally mild for many with gales at times

Happy New Year! Conditions stay unsettled to begin 2023 with a jet stream overhead for much of the week, ensuring low pressure systems can track east bringing cloud, wind and rain. This will be keeping cold weather away from the shores of the British Isles though, with some mild weather in the south, although cooler in Scotland. An odd day will be dry with sunny spells and there will be a few slight overnight frosts.

Wednesday 4/1/23
Low pressure north of Scotland on Wednesday. A front through southern England brings cloud and rain here, most of it in the southeast and this could be heavy at times. Severe gales in northern Scotland with rain. Showers affecting Ireland with fewer showers in western areas of England, Wales and Scotland. Some bright or sunny spells developing for many away from the showers. Breezy with highs at 7 to 12C.

Thursday 5/1/23
Low pressure passing through the country bringing rain to many parts of Ireland and northern England as well as southern Scotland. Some snow could affect hills here. Cloudy and breezy to the south with a risk of some drizzle, especially on coasts. Some rain in western Scotland but dry in the far north. Highs at 6C in northern Scotland, 11C in southern England.

Friday 6/1/23
A ridge of higher pressure builds on Friday bringing a drier, bright and cooler day for most. Eastern coasts may have some showers, and a few could affect coasts of Wales. Sunny spells. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Saturday 7/1/23
Wet and windy weather sweeps in from the west on Saturday. Fronts passing east taking heavy periods of rain with them. Brighter, blustery conditions following the rain from the west, some heavy showers on western coasts and hills, some of them wintry. Highs at 4 to 10C, turning cooler later as the rain clears.

Sunday 8/1/23
Brighter through Sunday but staying breezy. Some showers over western coasts and hills whilst being drier in the east. The showers may be heavy in the west. Tops near 5 to 9C.

Monday 9/1/23
Cloud and periods of rain are likely to be affecting Scotland and Northern Ireland on Monday. Early rain in southern Ireland and the south of the UK, but this clears to leave a few brighter spells inland, although still cloudy in the west. Highs at 6 to 10C.
