Rain, sleet and snow
Risk of snow in south

Issued: 0800 Wednesday 27th January 2021
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Unsettled weather with rain, sleet and snow, generally colder north and some milder air to the south at times

The unsettled weather continues through the week ahead with a battle between colder air to the north and milder to the south. There will be periods of rain although these will turn to sleet and snow over higher ground. There is much uncertainty over where sleet and snow may occur, although at the present time there is a risk of some through central and southern England and Wales on Saturday.

Saturday 30/1/21
Another area of low pressure crosses southern England on Saturday. There is some uncertainty over exactly where this will be but at the present time it appears an area of rain and sleet will be crossing Ireland, Wales, the Midlands and southern England. It may be that an area of snow develops across the Midlands and parts of East Anglia. Drive for northern England and Scotland as well as Northern Ireland. Cold for all with temperatures at 2 to 4C for most, but 7C in the far southwest.

Sunday 31/1/21
A widespread frost to start Sunday morning. Low-pressure will be to the west of Ireland with high-pressure to the east of England. Fronts will be bringing cloud and rain across Ireland and this will aid into Wales and Southwest England through the afternoon. Colder air may well turn the rain to sleet and snow across the high ground of Wales and Southwest England. Much drier and lighter in the east with some morning sunshine, but cloud and breeze increasing here through the afternoon. Highs at 2 to 5C overall.

Monday 1/2/21
Those fronts will be edging slowly eastwards through Monday. These will bring rain but also some sleet and snow to high ground. It may be rather misty and murky and feeling cold and damp for money. Possibly turning drier in the west and south for a time, although more rain probably arrives again later. Highs at 3 to 10C.

Tuesday 2/2/21
Another unsettled day for Tuesday as low pressure pushes cloud and rain east through many parts of the country. Most of the rain is likely to be across Ireland, England and Wales. Having said that there will be patchy rain in Scotland. Highs at 4C in northern Scotland, 11C in southern England.

Wednesday 3/2/21
A cooler day with more rain across southern Ireland, Wales and southern half of England. This may fall asleep in snow on the high ground. Generally drier for Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland although some wintry showers affecting northern and eastern Scotland. Highs around 3 to 6C.

Thursday 4/2/21
Low pressure remains in control through Thursday. Periods of rain and showers for many with the threat of wintry showers affecting eastern parts of Scotland and England. The further risk of some sleet across southern England. Highs at 3 to 6C.
