Turning milder
Cold for now

Issued: 0900 Friday 8th January 2021
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Cold with some rain, sleet and snow this weekend

A milder, westerly flow develops through the coming days gradually displacing the colder air that's been over the UK and Ireland recently. With it come a bit more in the way of rain but this largely falling over northern and western areas. Winds pick up too with coastal gales possible at times.

Monday 11/01/21
A mostly cloudy day for the UK and Ireland with outbreaks of rain for Scotland and the northwest half of the island of Ireland through the morning. This turns to snow over higher ground. Through the afternoon rain spreads into Wales and northern England. This reaches the Midlands during the evening. Best of the sun over southeast England. High temperatures at 3 to 9C.

Tuesday 12/01/21
A dry and fine start for Scotland and the north of England with a risk of a frost and patchy mist and fog here. Cloudier elsewhere while early rain clears the far south of England first thing. Cloud thickens over western areas with a risk of patchy rain into the far west of Ireland at times. The best of the sun to the east. Highs at 2 to 8C.

Wednesday 13/01/21
Low pressure to the northwest sends a series of fronts over Ireland and the UK on Wednesday with rain reaching most areas. This clears Ireland and Northern Ireland to leave a cloudy but dry afternoon. Rain lingers longest over northwest Scotland and the south of England. Coastal gales are possible to the far northwest and south. Highs at 5 to 11C.

Thursday 14/01/21
A northwesterly flow for much of the British Isles on Thursday as low pressure moves east. A weak ridge builds to the southwest which is where the best of the sunshine will be. Rain over northwest Scotland but staying mostly dry, if not rather cloudy, elsewhere. Highs of 6 to 9C.

Friday 15/01/21
High pressure to start the day across much of the UK brings a cool start. Low pressure to the southwest brings a cloudier and wet start here. Rain slowly spreads from the southwest but a mostly dry and fine day further north and east. Highs at 4 to 7C.

Saturday 16/01/21
Fronts clear east allowing high pressure to build from the southwest. Patchy rain affects northern and eastern areas first thing but conditions improve as the day progresses. High temperatures range from 3 to 7C.
