Cold with snow
Milder but unsettled later

Issued: 0930 Friday 22nd January 2021
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

cold air affecting all over coming days with the risk of sleet and snow in places. Milder from midweek onwards but turning more unsettled.

Colder air affecting the UK and Ireland through this weekend and into next week with some rain, sleet and snow all likely at times. From Wednesday onwards a milder flow moves in but with more unsettled conditions waiting in the wing; expect strengthened winds and more rainfall adding to already saturated ground, so flooding poses a likely risk.

Monday 25/1/21
Another cold day but with plenty of sunny spells and largely dry weather across the UK and Ireland. Wintry showers could affect the far southeast corner of England first thing before clearing off to allow for a dry rest of the day while snow showers continue to affect northern and western coasts and hills. Later across the Central Belt of Scotland pushing into southern Scotland there could be a scattering of snow for some as well as patchy light rain. Highs at 2 to 5C.

Tuesday 26/1/21
A ridge of high pressure brings a dry start to the day with sunshine and a widespread frost. Increasing cloud brings rain, preceded by a period of sleet and snow eastwards eventually through all parts of the country. It could be that several hours of snowfall affect parts of Scotland, northern and eastern England. Highs at 2 to 5C for most, but to 9 to 10C in western Ireland and southwest England as the winds increase here.

Wednesday 27/1/21
A weak and brief ridge of high pressure in the morning will bring a dry start for many but by late morning cloud will have thickend in the west and patchy rain, sleet and perhaps snow over higher ground, will push across western and central areas of the UK and Ireland. Drier for longer further east. Winds will also strengthen and rain could be heavy across western parts of the UK adding to the already saturated ground so flooding in places once again is a likely threat. Highs at 4 to 8C for most, 12C in southwest England, south and west Wales as well as across Ireland.

Thursday 28/1/21
Low pressure circulates to the west of Scotland on Thursday. Early rain is likely to clear quickly eastwards to be followed by some bright or sunny spells. Rain may affect northern and western Scotland for much of the day. A further area of rain reaching southern Ireland and western parts of Wales and England later. Winds blustery, particularly through the morning. Highs at 9 to 12C in the south and southeast, highs at 5 to 8C elsewhere.

Friday 29/1/21
Another milder day for the end of the week. Currently it looks to be settled with dry conditions for many at first before the next low pressure moves in from the west later in the day bringing strengthening winds and more rain, particularly to southwestern areas. Highs at 6 to 12C.

Saturday 30/1/21
Wet and windy yet mild once again on Saturday. Expect strong southwesterly winds with near gales closer to the coasts. Rain possibly heaviest towards the northwest this time as low pressure moves close to west Scotland. Highs at 7 to 12C.
