Week ahead - January 23, 2021
Cold with snow
Milder but unsettled later

Issued: 0930 Saturday 23rd January 2021
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Cold air affecting all over coming days. Sleet and snow risk for some.

Colder air affecting the UK and Ireland through this weekend and into next week with some rain, sleet and snow all likely at times. From Wednesday onwards a milder flow moves in accompanied by more unsettled conditions. Expect strengthened winds and more rainfall adding to already saturated ground, so flooding poses a likely risk.

Tuesday 26/01/21
A ridge of high pressure brings a dry start to the day with sunshine and a widespread frost across Great Britain. Increasing cloud brings rain, preceded by a period of sleet and snow eastwards eventually through all parts of Ireland and much of the UK. It could be that several hours of snowfall affect parts of Scotland and northern England. High temperatures at 1 to 6C for most, 8 to 10C possible in western Ireland and the West Country.

Wednesday 27/01/21
A dry start for many but through the morning cloud thickens in the west and patchy rain, sleet and perhaps snow over higher ground, will push across western and central areas of the UK and Ireland. Rain could be locally heavy across western areas where it will fall on saturated ground so flooding in places once again is a likely risk. Drier for longer further east. Winds will also strengthen. Highs range from 5C in the north to 11 or 12C in the southwest of England and Ireland.

Thursday 28/01/21
Low pressure circulates to the west of Scotland on Thursday. Early rain is likely to clear quickly eastwards to be followed by some bright or sunny spells. Rain may affect parts of northern and western Scotland and Northern Ireland for much of the day. Winds blustery, particularly through the morning. Highs reach just 3C in northern Scotland, 12C in southeast England.

Friday 29/01/21
Friday looks to be another mild but unsettled say with rain and strong winds spreading across the region from the southwest. A separate band of rain lingers over northern Scotland for much of the day. Highs at just 1C in northern Scotland, 11C in southeast England.

Saturday 30/01/21
Another unsettled day on Saturday with further outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow though conditions gradually brighten from the west and northwest as low pressure moves over the North Sea. Cold in the north with highs here at 0C. Milder in the south with highs of 13C for some.

Sunday 31/01/21
Confidence is low at this time but a transient ridge of high pressure may bring a dry and fine day to much of Ireland and the UK. Cloudier with outbreaks of rain to the southwest and south. Highs range from 2 to 6C.
