Cold & warm air battle

Issued: 0930 Friday 30th January 2021
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Cold air and milder air battle it out through the week with rain, sleet and snow expected. Colder for all at the weekend.

A fight between the cold and milder air continues through this week with rain, sleet and snow all expected. At the end of the week and through the weekend an easterly flow sets in as high pressure becomes more dominant and cold air sinks south throughout the country.

Tuesday 02/02/21
Low pressure west of Ireland will be pushing fronts east on Tuesday. This is going to be bringing heavy periods of rain and strong winds through many areas. A period of snow could affect northern England and southern Scotland as the rain meets colder air. Staying dry across northern Scotland. Highs at 2 to 6C in northern areas and a milder 8 to 12C elsewhere.

Wednesday 03/02/21
Low pressure again in control through Wednesday. Cloud and rain as well as some sleet and snow across Scotland, sotuhern and central areas mianly with the north seeing drier conditions. Much of England and Wales will be dry with conditions improving across Northern Ireland, however, southern parts of England will have cloudier skies and outbreaks of rain. Highs at 2 to 4C across Scotland and Northern England, highs between 7 to 10C elsewhere.

Thursday 04/02/21
That area of low pressure over Ireland is still with us on Thursday and again Northern Ireland, southern and central Scotland will bear the brunt of any persistent rain, sleet and snow. Northern England as well as north Wales will also see outbreak do rain, snow over higher ground. Some patchy rain expected across southern and central England too. Drier elsewhere. Highs at 2 to 5C in the north and 6 to 11C in the south.

Friday 05/02/21
A largely dry and bright day for Friday as an easterly flow develops. It will be cool for all areas and there is a risk of some wintry showers, most of these affecting northern and eastern Scotland. Best of the sunshine in the west. Highs at 3 to 9C.

Saturday 06/02/21
High pressure to the northeast maintains a brisk easterly flow into the weekend so it will be breezy and cold, feeling particularly bitter in the east. A bright day with a scattering of wintry showers for eastern coastal areas. Highs at 1 to 4C.

Sunday 07/02/21
High pressure remains the dominant feature on Sunday therefore allowing for another mostly dry but cold day. With an easterly wind still expect wintry showers pushing into easter areas. Highs at 1 to 4C.
