Fluctuating temperatures, windy and unsettled next week

Changeable week ahead. There will be periods of rain, sleet and snow at first, most of this affecting Scotland and eastern England. Tending to be dry at the weekend before more wind, rain and showers arrive next week together with less chilly conditions.

Sunday 17/01/21
A ridge of high pressure builds to the south on Sunday, although low pressure stays to the north. There will be some wintry showers in northern and western Scotland. Elsewhere it is likely to be brighter although always with a fair amount of cloud, the best of any sunny spells in the east. Highs at 4 to 7C.
 

Monday 18/01/21
Monday sees low pressure north of Scotland as well as southwest of Ireland. Wintry showers or even longer spells of sleet with snow on high ground over Scotland. Rain affecting Ireland as well as Wales and southern England later. Drier in eastern areas. Highs at 4 to 7C.
 

Tuesday 19/01/21
Low pressure across southern areas on Tuesday. Cloudy with outbreaks of rain for England, Wales and Ireland. This possibly turning to snow over higher ground in the north of England. Cloudy but dry for Northern Ireland. Bright with wintry showers for Scotland. Highs at 3 to 9C.

Wednesday 20/01/21
Low pressure clears east of the UK on Wednesday. A cold northwesterly flow develops bringing a bright day for most. Showers, these often wintry, affect northwestern areas. High temperatures at 2 to 6C.

Thursday 21/01/21
A northwesterly flow persists into Thursday bringing another chilly but mostly bright day. Wintry showers persist to the northwest. Cloud thickens from the southwest later. Highs at 3 to 7C.

Friday 22/01/21
Low pressure passes east over southern parts of the British Isles bringing strong winds and outbreaks of rain here. Staying cold but bright over northern areas with scattered wintry showers. Highs of 1 to 6C.
