Week ahead - January 07, 2021
Turning milder later
Cold for now

Issued: 0900 Thursday 7th January 2021
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Cold initially with some rain, sleet and snow but then milder air moves in through next week.

This cold weather is still yet to hang on over the coming few days, but a milder flow looks not too far away. Today and tomorrow will see rain, sleet and snow push southwards, but through the weekend a change will arrive; a more westerly flow and largely settled conditions come about as high pressure builds over the UK and Ireland through much of next week. Rain though for the north.

Sunday 10/1/21
The ridge of high pressure persists for many on Sunday, bringing dry and sunny weather to England, Wales and much of Ireland. A front moves in to northwest Scotland seeing drizzle over western Scotland and western coasts of Ireland, further drizzle in northwest England, however, drier yet cloudy in the east. Windy too in northern Scotland. Staying cold at 2 to 4C for most, 7C in northern Scotland and western Ireland as well as west coasts of Wales and Cornwall.

Monday 11/1/21
It will be a cloudier day overall with the best of any sunshine in the far east. Low cloud and drizzle over western coasts and hills. More persistent rain in northern and western Scotland as well as across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Tops at 4 to 7C.

Tuesday 12/1/21
Tuesday will improve as the day progresses, but initially low-pressure will cross Scotland before clearing over the North Sea. The rain could be heavy at times with snow over high ground. It may be windy to although details are difficult to pin down at this stage. Turning drier and brighter yet cold from the north. Highs at 4 to 9C.

Wednesday 13/1/21
A ridge of high-pressure to start on Wednesday. This will bring a frosty start for many, severe in northern and central Scotland. It will be a dry and bright start for eastern areas but cloudier skies in the west. Cloud and rain will push into northern and western areas through the day. Highs at 5 to 9C.

Thursday 14/1/21
A cloudy and wet start for England and Wales, although dry and bright and therefore potential frost patches in the north. Heavier rain will clear southern areas but it will remain cloudy. Cloud will build across the north too with patchy rain moving in. A mild day by the afternoon for southern and western areas, highs here at 9 to 12C. Further north highs range between 6 to 9C.

Friday 15/1/21
Another cloudy day and somewhat unsettled compared to recently. Outbreaks of rain will affect many areas with driest conditions currently looking to be across central and easten areas of England.
