Cold for now

Issued: 0800 Wednesday 6th January 2021
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Staying cold with sleet and some snow, but turning milder next week

The cold weather is going to be continuing as we go through the coming days. In fact Thursday and Friday are likely to be the coldest days of the current cold snap. There will be some sleet and snow around and slight accumulations are possible even at low levels. There are hints that next week becomes milder although an increased risk of some drizzle and rain, mainly in the west and north.

Saturday 9/1/21
Another cold day with a reach of high pressure over the UK and Ireland. It should be mostly dry with some bright or sunny spells for much of England, Wales, Ireland and eastern Scotland. Thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain and sleet affects northern and Northwest Scotland with snow on hills. Little changes into the afternoon with the best of the bright or sunny spells in the east. High temperatures at 2 to 5C.

Sunday 10/1/21
The ridge of high pressure persists on Sunday. This brings plenty of dry weather over England and Wales as well as Ireland with some sunny spells here. Drier in eastern Scotland, cloudy here. Drizzle over western Scotland and western coasts of Ireland, further drizzle in northwest England. Windy in northern Scotland. Staying cold at 2 to 4C for most, 7C in northern Scotland and western Ireland as well as west coasts of Wales and Cornwall.

Monday 11/1/21
Pressure stays generally high over the south of the UK with some broken cloud, dry weather and the best sunny spells in the east. Low cloud and drizzle over western coasts and hills. More persistent rain in western Scotland and western Ireland. Tops at 4 to 7C.

Tuesday 12/1/21
Tuesday is set to become a better day for many as low-pressure crosses Scotland. The rain could be heavy at times with snow over high ground. It may be windy to although details are difficult to pin down at this stage. Highs at 4 to 8C.

Wednesday 13/1/21
A ridge of high-pressure building on Wednesday and this will bring rather a lot of cloud and the risk of some drizzle across Ireland and much of central and western parts of the UK. Scotland and north-east England are likely to be drier with some bright spells. Highs at 5 to 9C.

Thursday 14/1/21
A weak ridge of high pressure across England and Wales on Wednesday. Cloud in the west with some drizzle, drier in the east. More persistent rain in Scotland and Ireland. Highs at 6 to 9C.
