Easterly flow develops
Snow showers

Issued: 0900hrs Saturday 2nd January 2021
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Northerly winds turn easterly allowing for some wintry weather to the east

Our current northerly flow will switch around to a more easterly flow from Sunday with eastern and central areas likely to be hit by a mix of rain, sleet and snow. Drier towards the north and west. Frost and ice remain a daily risk for many. Some uncertainty in the forecast going forward from mid-week but temperatures look to be staying colder with further outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow for many.

Tuesday 05/01/21
Low pressure to the south and high pressure to the north keeps a cold easterly flow over the UK and Ireland. Patchy rain, sleet and snow are expected over parts of England and Wales, but particularly eastern areas, while the north and west stays mainly dry. Some wintry showers will affect eastern Scotland too at times. Mist and fog will be a risk over northwestern areas. High temperatures of just 0 to 5C.

Wednesday 06/01/21
Some uncertainty creeps into the forecast going forward from Wednesday. Currently it looks like an area of low pressure arrives over southeastern England bringing patchy wintry precipitation here while a front arrives over northwest Scotland and Ireland bringing the potential for heavy sleet and snow here later. Staying dry and fine for most between these areas. Highs of -1 to 5C for most.

Thursday 07/01/21
Again, there is a fair amount of uncertainty regarding Thursday's forecast. Current thoughts are that pressure may tend to drop bringing a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow to much of the UK and Ireland. This heaviest to the north and west. Highs of -1 to 4C.

Friday 08/01/21
Confidence remains low but indications are that high pressure tries to build to the north again bringing a mostly dry day here while low pressure continues to bring a mix of wintry precipitation to southern areas. Highs range from just -2 to 5C.

Saturday 09/01/21
Confidence remains low for Saturday. Pressure may lower to the far north allowing wintry precipitation to develop over northern areas while high pressure slides south bringing a drier day here. A risk of mist and fog for many. Highs of 1 to 7C.

Sunday 10/01/21
Again, confidence is low but pressure may stay lower to the north bringing outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow into parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland while southern areas stay mostly dry with the risk of mist and fog patches. Highs range from 1 to 5C.
