Rain & wind

Issued: 0930 Sunday 4th October 2020
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Unsettled with rain and high winds this week before high pressure builds at the weekend.

The UK will be dominated by low pressure this week, bringing rain, some heavy spells at times, as well as high winds. Thursday and Friday for the north are particularly unsettled. At the weekend high preessure looks to build settling the weather down significantly for the start of next week.

Wednesday 07/10/20
A westerly flow prevails midweek while low pressure sits close by to northern Scotland. A breezy day for the north with rain in the far north of Scotland with showers across western areas of the UK and Ireland. Driest and brightest conditions in the east and south. Maximum temperatures at 11 to 15C.

Thursday 08/10/20
Low pressure is expected to track east northeastwards across the UK on Thursday, bringing outbreaks of rain to all areas of the country by the end of the day. The current track of the low is likely to alter closer to the day but currently the heaviest of rainfall will be across northwest Ireland, Northern Ireland as well as Scotland and northwest England. This will also be where the highest wind strengths are likely in this current track of the low pressure. Gale force winds are likely in some exposed areas. The southeast of England will stay driest for longest. Much of the UK will see temperatures up a few degrees sitting within a warm sector. Highs at around 17-19C in the south and southeast. Colder in the far north and far west with highs here at 9-12C.

Friday 09/10/20
The deep area of low pressure will circulate just to the north of mainland Scotland through Friday. It will still be a breezy day, particularly so further north and west where gales are still in force. Blustery showers or longer spells of rain will affect northern and western areas. The Northern Isles will see the heaviest of rainfall. The driest and brightest of conditions expected in the east as well as the south. A cooler day with highs of 9 to 15C.

Saturday 10/10/20
The low pressure pulls away from the UK on Saturday and moves towards Denmark. In doing so winds will gradually veer round to a chilly northerly direction and still be reasonably brisk along eastermost coasts. Showers will affect northern and westermost areas through much of the day. Meanwhile, high pressure builds in the west and any showers over Ireland and Northern Ireland will gradually diminish here later on. Highs of 9 to 16C.

Sunday 11/10/20
High pressure attempts to become established across the British Isles with slacker winds and plenty of dry and fine conditions. A cooler northerly flow will persist however and felt more in the east where there will be showers pushing onshore. Highs of 9 to 14C.

Monday 12/10/20
Another generally settled day to start the new week, however, expect cloud to thicken and rain to push across Northern Ireland, Ireland as well as northern and western parts of Scotland through the day. Largely dry with sunny spells elsewhere although the far southeast tip of England could see cloudier skies and some scattered showers. Highs of 10 to 14C.
