Mild south

Issued: 0930 Sunday 25th October 2020
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Unsettled with wet and windy conditions at times

Staying unsettled during this week as the jet stream sits right over the UK and Ireland allowing low pressure systems to pass across the region. Expect heavy rain and strong winds at times. Temperatures around or slightly above average in the south but always feeling cooler towards the north and west.

Wednesday 28/10/20
Low pressure circulates just to the west of Scotland on Wednesday bringing a brisk westerly flow to much of the UK and Ireland. Expect showers across mainly western areas, at times merging into longer spells of rain here. Some of these showers are likely to push eastwards on that blustery wind. Far southern and southeastern parts of England could also see more persistent rain as a front is slow to clear. Drier and brighter generally further east. Highs at 8 to 13C.

Thursday 29/10/20
Another unsettled day once again as rain spreads in from the west. A dry start in the north and east but rain will soon affect most places by the early afternoon. The far north of Scotland is likely to stay dry for much of the day. There is some uncertainty on the exact track of the low pressure at this stage, but there is the chance for drier conditions behind the rain across parts of Wales and southwest England as well as eastern Ireland. A breezy day for all but particularly so across more southern areas. Highs range from 12 to 15C for most, a chilly 9C for northern Scotland.

Friday 30/10/20
There is again a little uncertainty in the detail of the forecast come Friday. It currently looks like many eastern areas will be dry for much of the day, although rain or showers are likely to affect more western areas. Another area of Atlantic low pressure will likely bring rain to Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales initially before spreading eastwards. The timing and exact track of the low still remains uncertain however. Highs on the mild side at 13 to 17C.

Saturday 31/10/20
Unsettled and wet to the north as an area of low pressure moves across Northern Ireland then Scotland. Heavy and persistent rain is likely across these regions as well as Ireland. Rain too affecting Wales and western England. Drier elsewhere as high pressure attempts to ridge in from the near continent. A windy day once again. Highs at a cool 9 to 11C for Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland; 15 to 17C for much of England and Wales.

Sunday 01/11/20
Staying unsettled on Sunday as another area of low pressure moves in from the Atlantic. Outbreaks of rain, this locally heavy, moves eastward over Ireland and the UK with blustery showers and sunny spells following from the west. Very windy with a risk of widespread gales. Highs range form 8 to 11C for many, 12 to 15C across central and southern England.

Monday 02/11/20
Early rain clears to the southeast on Monday leaving a bright day for most. Blustery showers will affect western areas but will gradually become confined to the northwest as high pressure builds to the south. Highs at a mild 12 to 17C.
