Wet and windy, risk of flooding; drier next week and Christmas

Periods of rain, some of it heavy in the next couple of days, turning milder as well. A risk of localised flooding. Confidence is low but Christmas Day and Boxing Day look drier and brighter at this time.

Sunday 22/12/19
An area of low pressure clears to the east of England on Sunday morning taking rain with it. A breezy day too for many areas. A few showers in western Scotland which may merge to give longer spells of rain. These turn to snow over higher ground too. Showers too for western Ireland as well as the west of Wales and southwest England. Drier for central and eastern areas though the odd shower may develop here at times. High temperatures at 4 to 8C.

Monday 23/12/19
A weak ridge of high pressure builds over southern areas on Monday bringing drier and brighter conditions here initially. A westerly flow for northern areas brings cloud, wind and outbreaks of rain to western parts of Scotland and northwestern Ireland. An area of low pressure arrives from the southwest through the afternoon bringing heavy outbreaks of rain to southern Ireland, south Wales and southern parts of England. Highs at 6 to 9C.

Christmas Eve 24/12/19
High pressure holds on over southern parts of the country into Christmas Eve bringing a dry and bright day here after early mist and fog patches clear. A westerly breeze over northern areas brings frequent showers to western coasts and hills of Scotland, Northern Ireland and, perhaps, into the northwest of England. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Christmas Day 25/12/19
Confidence is low at this time but it could be that Christmas Day is mostly dry and bright across the UK and Ireland with just the odd scattered shower. Early mist and fog should clear while occasional showers may develop over the northern half of the country. High temperatures at 3 to 6C.

Boxing Day 26/12/19
Again, confidence is low, but higher pressure could hold on through Boxing Day to give another mostly dry and fine day after early mist and fog patches clear. Occasional isolated showers affecting eastern areas. Low pressure may arrive from the west later bringing cloud, strong winds and outbreaks of rain. Highs at 1 to 6C.

Friday 27/12/19
Friday may see high pressure hold on over northern and eastern areas bringing a dry and bright day here. Low pressure brings more cloud, rain and strong winds to Ireland, Northern Ireland and southern parts of England and Wales. Highs at 0 to 5C for many, 8 or 9C for southern parts of England.
