Cold through this weekend and early next week, some snow over hills; milder and unsettled later

Cold weather over the coming days. There may be snow over the hills of western and northern parts of the UK and Ireland. Tending to be more unsettled into next week as low pressure develops west of Ireland bringing periods of rain, some of it heavy.

Tuesday 17/12/19
Low pressure to the west of Ireland on Tuesday while a weak ridge builds over the British Isles bringing plenty of bright sunshine. Scattered showers in western parts of the UK and along southern coasts. More persistent rain for northern Scotland. Many areas will be dry although rather misty with a risk of fog at first. Cloud builds into the southwest of Ireland later. High temperatures at 2 to 7C.

Wednesday 18/12/19
Low pressure over and west of Ireland on Wednesday brings periods of rain to Ireland. A dry and bright day for much of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland though cloud builds across southwestern areas later. A windy day for Ireland and the southwest UK. High temperatures at 2 to 10C.
 

Thursday 19/12/19
Unsettled on Thursday as low pressure sends fronts across Ireland and the UK. Outbreaks of rain spread from the southwest across the country. This falls as snow over the mountains of Scotland. A breezy day too with the strongest winds to the west. Highs at 5 to 10C.
 

Friday 20/12/19
Two separate areas of low pressure to the north and south bring outbreaks of rain to the north of Scotland and south of England and Ireland on Friday. Mostly dry elsewhere but rather cloudy. High temperatures at 5 to 9C.

Saturday 21/12/19
Early rain clears to the southeast of England to leave a dry day for England, Scotland and Wales. A front brings rain into Ireland, Northern Ireland, west Wales and southwest England through the afternoon. Highs at 4 to 8C.

Sunday 22/12/19
Low pressure to the northwest sends further fronts across the country on Sunday. Outbreaks of rain for most areas - these particularly heavy over England and Wales. A windy day too. Highs at 4 to 12C.
