Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Staying often dry, but some showers

The remainder of this week will be warm across Britain and Ireland, fed by a waft of warm air from the continent. Then a marked change of pattern over the weekend as winds turn northerly, bringing notably cold air for a few days. Frost and wintry showers in the forecast for some places.

Friday 08/05/20
Slack high pressure lying to the southeast of Britain brings a warm day to central and southern regions. Cloud will tend to build through the day, and a few bursts of rain are likely to form across western and northern areas, these very hit and miss but locally heavy, possibly thundery. Light winds means any showers will drift around slowly. Highs 15 to 23C, warmest in the southeast.

Saturday 09/05/20
Low pressure forming around Biscay and high pressure building to the north of Britain. Chillier air beginning to arrive in Scotland with showers. Areas of rain possible for southern England, some heavy bursts. Fairly cloudy, a little sun in northern England. Temperatures ranging from 10C or below in Scotland, up to 20C or above in central and southern England away from any rain.

Sunday 10/05/20
Heavy rain is possible across central-southern Britain for a time as a clash of air masses takes place across the country. Cold air spreads in from the north, with sunshine and scattered showers developing, these of hail or snow over northern hills. Brisk east to northeasterly winds feeling distinctly cold. Temperatures staying below 10C for many places.

Monday 11/05/20
High pressure to the northwest ushers a cold northeasterly wind across all regions. Rain should move away into Europe, but a scattering of showers will come down from the north, these of hail or briefly snow in places, particularly hills in the northeast. Sunniest in the west. Highs 6 to 11C.

Tuesday 12/05/20
High pressure stays to the west, with a north to northwesterly airflow. A few showers for northern areas, wintry over the mountains. Sunshine best in central and southern Britain. Hard frost for some in the morning. Highs 8 to 13C.

Wednesday 13/05/20
Mostly dry with scattered showers. High pressure stays nearby. A risk of frost again at dawn. Temperatures recovering a little by day, up to 10 to 14C.
