Turning colder and mixed, chance of snow increases next week

A change in conditions through the rest of this week and next week. Winter is going to make its presence felt as rain turning to sleet and snow over the hills of northern England and Scotland on Friday. Chilly through the weekend with mixed conditions. The risk of some cold weather with sleet and snow in places into the middle of next week.

Friday 18/1/19
Low pressure drifts into Ireland on Friday. This pushes rain eastwards through much of western England and Wales. As the rain reaches the colder air over England and Scotland and turns it to snow over the Pennines and southern Scotland. Showers and some bright spells following into Ireland and western parts of Wales and England. Further outbreaks of sleet and snow in southern Scotland, drier and cold in central and northern Scotland. Highs at a cold 2 to 5C for most, 7C in Ireland and Wales, 10C in southwest England.


Saturday 19/1/19
Pressure stays low on Saturday, centred oto the south of England. It will be a chilly day, feeling cold for many. Outbreaks of showery rain throughout. There could be some wintry precipitation over eastern Scotland and eastern England. Tending to be drier and brighter in the west with sunny spells. Highs at 4 to 7C.

 


Sunday 20/1/19
A cold day with low pressure to the south. The risk of some sleety drizzle in Scotland and Ireland. Broken cloud in southern and central England and Wales with some bright or sunny spells. Best of any sunshine in northern England. Highs at 2 or 3C in the south, 4C in Scotland and northern England.
 


Monday 21/1/19
A weak ridge of high pressure on Monday brings a dry but chilly day in England and Wales. Rain into western Scotland and Ireland, turning to snow on hills. Drier in the east. Highs at 7C in western Scotland and western Ireland, 3 to 5C for most other areas.


Tuesday 22/1/19
Low pressure brings more unsettled weather on Tuesday. There is the threat of rain, sleet and snow. Winds may be strong. Wintry showers and colder weather follows to the north and west. Highs at 3 to 7C.

Wednesday 23/1/19
Pressure remains low. The threat of some rain, sleet and snow, most of this in the west. Drier north and east. Staying cold. Highs at 2 to 5C.
