Cool and mixed
Rain, sleet & snow

Issued: 0900 Monday 21st January 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Staying mixed and cool with rain, sleet and snow at times

Cool days in the coming week, although there will be occasions when milder air intrudes from the Atlantic. The jet stream is to the south of the UK and Ireland overall and this allows from the cooler air to affect most places. There will be rain, sleet and snow at times. Indications are that temperatures fall again through later part of the weekend and early next week.

Thursday 24/1/19
A cold front passes eastwards through thye UK on Thursday. This brings with it an area of rain, sleet and snow through Scotland and Ireland in the morning, then England and Wales in the afternoon. Sleet and snow over high ground. Milder air arrives from the west later in the day, where it will become increasingly misty and murky too. Highs at 3C in southeast England, 10C in western Ireland

Friday 25/1/19
Low pressure to the northeast of Scotland on Friday. Lots of cloud and a fresh to strong breeze affecting western coasts and hills. Inland cloud will be breaking with some bright or sunny spells developing. Feeling mild in the south too. An area of rain slips south with a front into Scotland and Northern Ireland, this rain turning to snow over the hills as colder, brighter weather follows in the far north. Highs at 9C in southern areas, 5C in the far north of Scotland.

A northwesterly flow on Saturday with the risk of some sleet and snow in the south, this clearing away. Sunshine and showers affecting most areas, the showers falling as snow on northern and western coasts and hills. Highs at 4 to 7C.

Sunday 27/1/19
A cold day in a northwest flow. There will be good spells of sunshine, but also some wintry showers around western, northern and eastern coasts and hills. More central and southern areas will be brighter and drier. Highs at 2 to 5C.

Monday 28/1/19
Probably a milder day with a moist westerly flow affecting many areas. There will be cloud, drizzle and outbreaks of rain in northern and western areas. Some brighter spells breaking through in the east and south, although these will be few and far between. Highs at 6 to 10C.
