Week ahead - January 20, 2019
Cold, less cold, cold?
Variable weather ahead!

Issued: 1000hrs Sunday 20th January 2019
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Bitter winter put on ice for now

A very complex weather scenario is playing out at present, meaning forecasts beyond 4 or 5 days should be treated very cautiously. Latest indications favour a return to a less cold west by northwesterly pattern later this week, but further ahead the trends maintain scope for cold north or northeasterlies to prevail.

Wednesday 23/01/19
Low pressure centred to the north-east is expected to give a cyclonic northerly airflow during midweek. Detail is uncertain, but clusters of snow and hail showers are likely to affect areas in the north and north-west. A few wintry showers possible for south-west England - rain at lower levels. Largely dry for central, south and eastern England, with sunny spells. Expect icy conditions. Highs 0 to 4C.

Thursday 24/01/19
A complex and uncertain weather pattern later in the week. A cold northeast wind is likely to bring wintry showers to eastern coastal districts, locally spreading inland across East Anglia. High pressure over west and northern areas results in dry, clear and frosty conditions, with overnight temperatures well below zero. Daytime highs reaching 1 to 5C.

Friday 25/01/19
Indications favour fronts trying to push back in from the Atlantic, turning the wind back to a westerly, and allowing a transition to less cold air. A mix of sleet and rain in the north-west, where cloudy skies will prevail. Some sun toward the south and east, where the morning may be frosty. Highs 2 to 7C, mildeast south-west.

Saturday 26/01/19
Very low confidence: A developing area of low pressure may move in across the British Isles. Mild in the south, with a risk of rain, but colder air may return in the north, with a renewed chance of snow, especially over higher ground. Windy, perhaps gales for some. Highs 3 to 8C.

Sunday 27/01/19
A cool northwesterly pattern is possible, with sunshine and wintry showers. Perhaps becoming cooler more widely again from the north. Highs 2 to 7C.

Monday 28/01/19
An ongoing very uncertain, cool and showery pattern, with a risk of wintriness mixed in. Temperatures ranging between 2 and 7C across the UK.
