Sleet and snow
Cold early next week

Issued: 0900 Tuesday 29th January 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Snow for some, staying cold, more sleet and snow possible next week

Well what a weather week ahead! Wintry conditions in the coming days may bring snow to snow, especially high ground. The focus is fr rain, sleet and snow moving north of Thursday afternoon and overnight into Friday. Some areas may see disruptive snow, probably mainly over high ground, although there is much uncertainty. Things stay cold but become quieter over the weekend and then we head into another uncertain period next week with the threat of more sleet and, limited, snow in the west.

Friday 1/2/19
Low pressure is close to southern coasts of England on Friday. Fronts wrapped around the low will be bringing periods of rain, sleet and snow into Ireland, Wales and much of England overnight into Friday. This may allow for a period of several hours of snow, probably in the north Midlands and northern England which could lead to disruption. However, there is much uncertainty in this at the moment. Snow showers in northern Scotland, otherwise mostly far. Perhaps drier and milder n the far south of England. Highs at 7C in southern England, more widely 2 to 3C.

Saturday 2/2/19
Low pressure remains to the east with a ridge of high-pressure building to the west through Saturday. There will be a mix of sunny spells and wintry showers, most of the showers over more eastern areas where some could be heavy. A cold day with temperatures at 1 to 3°C.

Sunday 3/2/19
A frosty start to Sunday as a ridge of high-pressure builds over the country. This should bring a mostly fair day with sunny spells. Cloud increasing in Ireland with some rain in the west. Temperatures at 2 to 5°C.

Monday 4/2/19
Fronts pass east on Monday. These bring rain which could turn to sleet and snow across the high ground of Scotland, central and northern England. However, some snow could affect lower levels. Confidence in the detail is low. Highs at 1 to 4C for most, 7C in Ireland.

Tuesday 5/2/19
Another set of fronts may bring cloud and rain into Ireland, turning to slet on the hills. This area may give some sleet or snow in the far west. Highs at 1 to 4C overall but 7C in Ireland.

Wednesday 6/2/19
Wednesday may be milder but rather murky. Some drizzle in many northern and western areas. Highs at 3 to 7C.
