A widespread wintry mix of precipitation affects much of the UK today. Staying drier over Ireland and western parts of Scotland. The far southwest of the UK will also stay dry. Elsewhere, rain and sleet increasingly turns to snow from the north at lower levels as we head through the afternoon and evening.

Rain, sleet and snow affect eastern parts of Scotland through Saturday morning with further significant accumlations of snow over higher ground in the northeast. A band of rain and sleet affects northern and eastern parts of England too during the morning - this turns to snoe over higher ground. A drier start for western Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland and Wales though a scattering of showers affects Irish Sea coastal areas.

Snow starts to ease over northeast Scotland during the afternoon but continues over southeastern parts of the country. A wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow becomes much more widespread over England and into Wales but some areas, especially to the southwest, will stay dry. Snow is largely confined to higher ground but may start falling to lower levels in the north during the afternoon. Staying mostly dry for the island of Ireland with variable amounts of cloud and isolated coastal showers.

Saturday evening will see rain and sleet increasingly turn to snow at lower levels across the Midlands and into the southeast of England. Further snow is expected over northern parts of England as well as northern and eastern parts of Scotland. Staying drier for western Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland and the far southwest of the UK where the best of any clear skies will be found.
