Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Wet and windy weekend, perhaps improving next week

Very unsettled weather at the end of this week and through the weekend. Low pressure will dominate bringing strong winds, heavy rain and showers as well as cooler conditions. There are indications of an improvement by the end pof the forecast period as a ridge of higher pressure builds.

Thursday 15/8/19
A ridge of high pressure builds over the UK and Ireland on Thursday. Isolated showers will be dying away quickly to leave a mostly dry and bright day with sunny spells. Friday 16/8/19
Low pressure over Scotland on Friday. Fronts affecting southern England bringing cloud and rain here. A breezy day with a mix of sunshine and showers for most, the showers heaviest over western coasts and hills. More persistent rain may affect northern England. Highs at 21C in southeast England, 16 to 19C elsewhere.

Saturday 17/8/19
A deep area of low pressure affecting the UK and Ireland on Saturday. Heavy rain may pass across many central and southern areas with heavy showers across the north and west. A breezy day again, especially in the south. Highs at 17 to 21C.

Sunday 18/8/19
Low pressure remains on Sunday, passing east. This allows the winds to change into a cooler northwesterly direction for many. Sunshine and showers dominate, the showers heavy and thundery at times. Highs at 20C in the south, but 14 to 17C for most of the country.

Monday 19/8/19
Low pressure to the east with a ridge of higher pressure building west of Ireland on Monday. Showers in northern and eastern areas, but brighter and drier in the west and south. Temperatures at 16 to 21C.

Tuesday 20/8/19
A ridge of high pressure continues to affect the UK and Ireland on Friday. This should bring sunny spells although there could be showers in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Tops at 16 to 21C.
