Very cold air clears east making way for milder but more unsettled weather

There are signs of high pressure building from the southeast at the weekend bringing a more settled spell of weather for many.

Wednesday 17/02/21
Areas of low pressure to the northwest and southwest on Wednesday bring an unsettled day to Ireland and the UK with strong winds and outbreaks of rain. One band of rain clears northeast from northern England and Scotland during the morning with a mix of blustery showers and sunny spells following. Gales affect northwest coasts here. During the afternoon another band of rain spreads across Ireland and into the southwest of the UK. Coastal gales are possible to the south. High temperatures range from 5 to 10C.

Thursday 18/02/21
Thursday sees an area of low pressure gradually clear to the northeast of the UK taking any lingering rain from northern England and Scotland with it. Conditions will be briefly drier and brighter before another area of low pressure arrives from the west bringing further rain and strong winds to Ireland and the southwest UK. Coastal gales are likely to the west and southwest later. Highs at 5 to 10C.

Friday 19/02/21
A wet and windy day for most with coastal gales to the northwest. Outbreaks of rain spread from the west to most areas though these become increasingly patchy to the east and through the afternoon. Rain will be locally heavy to the west and may be more persistent at times to the southwest. High temperatures range from 7 to 14C.

Saturday 20/02/21
High pressure over the near continent looks to build across southeastern areas of the UK on Saturday. It will be a largely dry and fine day for most. Cloudier further north and west with some patchy rain affecting parts of Ireland and Scotland at times. High temperatures range from 10 to 15C.

Sunday 21/02/21
High pressure looks to continue to build across the UK and Ireland with increasingly dry and fine conditions spreading across the region. Staying cloudier further north and west with some patchy rain continuing for far northwestern parts of Ireland and Scotland. Highs range from 6C in the north to 13C in the south.

Monday 22/02/21
Some uncertainty in the detail but high pressure may get squeezed to the southeast on Monday allowing fronts to push in from the west bringing more widespread cloud and patchy rain to Ireland and western Scotland. Staying dry and fine for much of England and Wales. Highs range from 9 to 11C.
