Issued: 0800 Monday 8th February 2021
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Very cold with snow showers, most in the east, severe overnight frosts

Very cold weather is going to be continuing through this week. It will be breezy on several days and this will be enhancing the wind-chill, making conditions feel colder. There will be snow showers in the east, these tending to fade. Severe overnight frosts. By the end of the week some snow arrives in the west and south, although most other areas stay dry.

Thursday 11/2/21
Another widespread and severe frost to start Thursday morning. There will be a subtle change of pressure pattern on Thursday with low pressure to the west of Ireland and high-pressure east of England. This increases winds across Ireland and the far west of the UK. There will be an area of cloud, sleet and snow moving into Ireland during the day, bringing some snow flurries to the far west of Wales later. For other areas it should be a bright start to the day with plenty of sunshine. However cloud will tend to increase through the day and the winds will increase too. A very cold day, the wind making it feel even colder with highs at 1 to 3C.

Friday 12/2/21
Widespread frost again for Friday morning. There will be outbreaks of snow across Ireland in the west of the UK overnight, but these are likely to fade through Friday. Most other areas will be bright and breezy and feeling cold. Some good spells of sunshine especially in more eastern areas. Tops at 0 to 3C.

Saturday 13/2/21
Another very cold day on Saturday. It should be dry for most areas with some reasonable spells of sunshine, the best of these in the east. A risk of some thick of cloud and outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow in the far west of Ireland. Feeling even colder in the wind. Highs at 0 to 2C for most, but 5C in western Ireland.

Sunday 14/2/21
A weakening front passes through Ireland and into Wales and western England on Sunday. This is likely to be bringing cloud and periods of sleet and snow. Other areas will be dry with sunny spells although a strong wind too. Highs at 1 to 4C.

Monday 15/2/21
High-pressure stays to the east of the country on Monday. A brisk Southeast flow remains and this will be making it continue to be cold. One or two snow showers may affect eastern coast. An area of more persistent sleet and snow could affect parts of Ireland, Wales, central and southern England. Tops at 0 to 2C for most, 10C in southwest Ireland and 7C in southwest England.

Tuesday 16/2/21
The area of high pressure may slip further north of the UK on Tuesday. The cold easterly wind remains and there is a risk of some rain, sleet and snow in the south. Generally dry elsewhere although always the risk of some snow showers affecting eastern coasts. Highs near 0C in the east, 7C in the far southwest and Ireland.
