Week ahead - September 21, 2018
Mostly settled
Some northern rain

Issued: 1000 Friday 21st September 2018
Duty forecaster: David Hulse

A more settled week ahead, although some cloud and rain towards the north

After a weekend of rain and strong winds, the weather improves markedly for the most part next week as high pressure builds across Britain and Ireland, although frontal troughs near to Northern Scotland may push further south later, albeit as weakening features.

Monday 24/09/18
High pressure to the west of Ireland transfers east to cover much of the British Isles. Some showers at first in the north and west but these become confined to the far north of Scotland, with sunny spells developing quite widely. Remaining cool, highs 12 to 15C.

Tuesday 25/09/18
An intense high over the British Isles edges south, allowing frontal troughs to brush the north of Scotland. Staying dry with spells of sunshine for most on but with rain or drizzle at times around Northern Scotland, especially overnight. Strong winds developing in the north and west with gales for northwest Scotland. Highs 13 to 17C.

Wednesday 26/09/18
Pressure remains high over Southern Britain but with a cold front pushing further south into Scotland. Dry and sunny in England and Wales. Cloudier over Scotland with rain or drizzle, especially in the north and west. Milder for most parts, highs 15 to 18C, locally 19 to 20C in the east.

Thursday 27/09/18
The centre of the high in the south declines, with a new high becoming centred to the west or northwest of Ireland. A cold front moves south from Scotland across Ireland and the rest of Britain but as a weakening feature. Some light rain or showers in the north and west at first, possibly reaching the North of England for a time but then largely dying out. Otherwise dry with spells of sunshine, albeit rather hazy. Cooler in the north, highs 12 to 15C but fairly warm for central and southern parts, up to 19 to 22C.

Friday 28/09/18
Pressure remains high to the west of Ireland with a ridge extending east, although this looks likely to decline in the north later, allowing a frontal trough to make inroads into Northern Scotland. Perhaps an isolated light shower in the north of Scotland, otherwise dry with spells of sunshine developing. Risk of some rain in the north and west of Scotland later in the day or overnight. Cool and fresher generally, highs 12 to 17C.

Saturday 29/09/18
High pressure centred to the southwest of Ireland with a weakening cold front edging south across Northern Britain. Dry with sunny intervals for most areas but rain, mostly light, may push south across Scotland, possibly reaching Northern Ireland and the far north of England. Highs 12 to 18C.
