Rain, especially for the north and west

Fronts moving down from the northwest will bring rain at times for the end of the week into the weekend. Early next week confidence in the position of low pressure and associated fronts dips but the main focus for rain may be in the north and west, although temperatures are likely to be on the rise for most.

Friday 14/09/18
Low pressure to the north of Scotland will move east with an associated cold front crossing Scotland and Northern England, while a ridge of high pressure covers Southern Britain. Showers for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England and Wales, especially in the west, with the risk of a longer spell of rain for a time at first. Isolated light showers over England, chiefly around the southwest, but largely dry with spells of sunshine developing. Strong winds at times in the north. Highs 13 to 16C the north, up to 18 or 19C in the south.

Saturday 15/09/18
The ridge of high pressure across Southern Britain declines as low pressure and associated occluding and warm frontal troughs track in from the west. Confidence low to moderate in distribution of rain. The east and south of England is likely to stay mostly dry with some brightness but rain, moving east across Ireland is expected to push into the north and west of England and Wales, with another area of rain moving though Scotland. Risk of strong winds developing in the north and west. Highs 13 to 16C the north, up to 18 or 19C in the south.

Sunday 16/09/18
A shallow low and associated frontal trough moves south and east across England and Wales, with a weak ridge of high pressure building thereafter. Rain over Ireland, Northern England and Wales will move southeast and become light and patchy. Drier and brighter weather with some sunshine follows from the northwest but with showers for Northern Ireland and Western Scotland. Strong winds at first in the north and west. Highs 13 to 18C in the north, up to around 20C in central areas and locally a reasonably warm 23C in the southeast.

Monday 17/09/18
A weak ridge of high pressure across much of Britain and Ireland at first will decline, as complex Atlantic low pressure systems move northeast. Confidence in the forecast is low due to uncertainty regarding the track of low pressure. There is a possibility that much of England and Wales will stay dry but with light rain or drizzle moving into western area. An increasing risk of rain spreading northeast across Ireland and into Scotland. Highs 14 to 18C in the north and west, up to a warmer 23 to 25C in the southeast.

Tuesday 18/09/18
Low pressure to the north and west of the British Isles with a slow-moving, waving frontal trough affecting northern and western parts. Confidence in the forecast remains low. Some rain or drizzle in western areas, especially over coasts and hills, but dry for much of England and Wales with spells of sunshine developing. Spells of rain, occasionally heavy, in Ireland and Scotland, although Northeast Scotland may stay dry. Highs 15 to 20C in the north and west, possibly reaching a warm 25 to 27C in the east.

Wednesday 19/09/18
A ridge of high pressure near to eastern England but a waving frontal trough will affect northern and western areas with a deepening low moving north to the west of Ireland. Continuing low confidence in forecast detail. England and Wales will be dry with warm sunshine but Ireland and Scotland will have further spells of rain, heavy at times in the west. Highs 17 to 21C in the north, rising to 21 to 24C in the south and east.
