Rain, especially for the north and west

Changeable weather prevails over the weekend and into next week. The main focus for rain in the north and west, with the southeast having the best of the day weather. Early next week confidence in the position of low pressure and associated fronts dips but with the potential, for a time, of very strong winds in western areas. Some warmth returning to the south and east for a time early next week.

Saturday 15/09/18
A ridge of high pressure, extending north, at first will transfer east as low pressure to the northwest drives frontal troughs across Scotland and Ireland. Dry across much of England Wales with some brightness or hazy sunshine but there may be some drizzle around coasts and hills in Northwest England and North Wales. Mostly light rain or drizzle at first around Western Scotland and northern and western parts of Ireland will give way to more persistent and heavier rain during the evening and overnight. Becoming windy in the north and west. Highs 13 to 16C the north, up to 19 or 20C in the south.

Sunday 16/09/18
A cold front moves south into England and Wales, while low pressure to the northwest of Scotland will track east. Rain over Northern England pushes south into the Midlands and South Wales, turning light and patchy. The far south and southeast of England will remain dry, though. Early rain over Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland soon gives way to sunny intervals and showers. Windy in the far north. Highs 13 to 18C in the north, up to 19 or 20C in central areas and locally a reasonably warm 22 or 23C in the southeast.

Monday 17/09/18
A weak ridge of high pressure builds across the south for a time but a deep low approaches Ireland later and moves towards Northwest Scotland. Dry for much of England and Wales with any remaining light rain or drizzle over South Wales, the Midlands and Eastern England moving north and largely dying out. Rain or drizzle moves north across Ireland and into Western Scotland later but staying mostly dry in the east. Risk of gales or severe gales for Ireland and Western Scotland later. Highs 14 to 17C in the north, up to around 19C in central areas and locally a reasonably warm 21 to 23C in the southeast.

Tuesday 18/09/18
A deep low near to Northwest Scotland moves away north, with a moist southwesterly airstream becoming established across Britain and Ireland. Many western areas will remain cloudy with rain or drizzle, especially around winds coasts and hills. The east and places sheltered from the south to southwest wind will be dry with some warm sunshine. Risk of gales or severe gales for Western Scotland at first. Highs 15 to 20C in the north and west, possibly reaching a warm 25 to 27C in the east.

Wednesday 19/09/18
A deep low, moving north to the west of Ireland, will drive frontal troughs into Western areas. Mostly cloudy over Ireland and western parts of Britain with rain or drizzle, especially in windward areas before more widespread and persistent rain, preceded by strong south to southwest winds moves east across Ireland, into Scotland, then Northern England and Wales later. Most southern and eastern parts of England will remain dry throughout, though, with some sunshine. Highs 15 to 18C, locally 19 to 21C in the southeast.

Thursday 20/09/18
A large depression near to Iceland, with a cold front moving east across England and Wales. Rain over Northern England and Wales will move east during the day. Brighter weather with sunny intervals and showers will follow from the west, the showers most frequent in the west of Ireland and Scotland. Cooler generally, highs 13 to 15C in the north and west, 18 or 19C in the south and east.
