Cool and showery
Risk some persistent rain

Issued: 1000hrs Monday 3rd September 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Notably chilly days if rain sets in

After a very warm start to September, things are expected to take a turn for the worse during this week, as cool air and low pressure moves down from the north. Showers or some more persistent rain may develop, although southern Britain should escape often dry. Temperatures becoming distinctly cool for northern regions in particular later in the week, then improving again through the weekend and beyond.

Thursday 06/09/18
A cool day for northern Britain and Ireland, with a freshening northerly wind, and areas of showers. Some locally frequent and heavy bursts of rain developing, mixed with occasional sunny periods. Toward the Midlands and southern Britain, a greater chance of escaping often dry with broken cloud and some sun. A few showers may extend across central counties through the day and the breeze will pick up. Highs 17 to 20C south-east, just 13 to 16C north and west.

Friday 07/09/18
Low confidence of detail. Generally low pressure across northern Britain is expected to produce areas of rain or showers, possibly merging into some longer periods of heavy rain in north-eastern regions. A scattering of showers for central areas, with possible heavy bursts, but southern counties may again escape commonly dry. Cool and breezy, or windy for some areas. Temperatures struggling at just 10 to 12C or less in rain, highs up to 16 to 18C south.

Saturday 08/09/18
Ongoing low confidence: Staying fairly unsettled for northern and perhaps central districts. Areas of rain or showers revolving around a small zone of low pressure. These could just give scattered slow-moving bursts of rain, but a risk of more organised widespread rain and cool weather. Driest and brightest in southern England. Temperatures ranging from 10C or less in rain, up to 15 to 18C.

Sunday 09/09/18
The remnants of low pressure may trigger a few further showers for northern regions in particular, but probably fading. Often dry with some sun in the south, where temperatures likely lifting. Highs 14 to 20C.

Monday 10/09/18
Most rain likely focused toward the north-west, whilst the south & south-east should be mainly dry and warm. Highs 15 to 21C.

Tuesday 11/09/18
A similar north-west to south-east split is likely. Some rain possible north. Dry and warm south. Highs 14 to 22C.
