Becoming settled

A generally quiet and mild weather pattern takes us into and through the Christmas period as high pressure establishes across the British Isles. Occasional weather fronts will bring some rain and drizzle to northern and western areas and it will be rather grey, foggy and murky at times.

Boxing Day 26/12/18
High pressure is off to the southeast keeping the British Isles in a rather mild southwesterly airflow. It will be a rather grey and dull day with a chance of drizzle or light rain for northwestern parts of Scotland. Across Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern parts of England and Wales there is a risk of fog that may persist through the day. Light winds for most. Highs at 7 to 11C.

Thursday 27/12/18
A ridge of high pressure extends across the British Isles maintaining a mild southwesterly flow. It will be another rather grey and dull day with a risk of mist and fog for many areas. Again, this could persist through the day. Some drizzle or light rain could persist for western coasts of Scotland and Wales. The best chance of any brightness will be in the northeast of England. Light winds again for most. Highs at 7 to 9C.

Friday 28/12/18
The mild southwesterly flow continues through Friday as the ridge of high pressure persists. The day will start bright for many though there will be a risk of fog for central areas. Cloud will build from the west through the day as a weak trough approaches from the Atlantic. Rain moving into western areas by the late afternoon. Winds staying light. Highs at 6 to 11C.

Saturday 29/12/18
It will be a wet start for western areas before yesterday's trough weakens and high pressure reestablishes. It will stay cloudy for northern and western areas while it will be dry and bright in the south and east. Winds will stay light. Highs at 7 to 11C.

Sunday 30/12/18
A weak weather front edges across the northern half of the British Isles on Sunday pushing high pressure off to the south. It will be a cloudy day for all with rain affecting most parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland through the morning and afternoon. Winds will strengthen ahead of the front. High temperatures at 7 to 11C.

Monday 31/12/18
High pressure reestablishes once more as the weakening front moves off to the south. Light rain and cloud will clear to the south leaving a bright and dry day in the north. Winds will drop again. High temperatures at 5 to 8C.
