Cool and mixed but then an unsettled, windy and milder weekend

A cool and rather mixed week ahead. There will be rain, most of it in the west until the weekend. Eastern areas are likely to be coldest. All parts becoming milder and more unsettled at the weekend with rain and strong winds affecting all areas. Indications are that it stays unsettled into the early stages of next week.

Thursday 13/12/18
Thursday sees low pressure drifting into the west of the UK and Ireland. This brings cloud and rain, some of it heavy in places. Higher pressure to the east keeps these areas cold and mainly drier, although there will be drizzle close to the coasts. There is a risk of some snow over the hills of Wales, northwest England and southwest Scotland. A cold day at 3 to 5C for most but 7C in Ireland and southwest England.

Friday 14/12/18
Low pressure again west of Ireland with high pressure to the east. Breezy in Ireland with rain. Increasing cloud in western Scotland bringing rain, this turning to sleet and snow over the hills. Cloud and some outbreaks of rain over eastern coasts of Scotland. Drier and rather cloudy elsewhere with only a few bright or sunny spells. Highs at 3 to 5C for most, 7C in southwest England and 10C in Ireland.

Saturday 15/12/18
A deep area of low pressure west of Scotland on Saturday. A gale frce southwest wind sweeps fronts eastwards, these taking rain with them. The rain may be heavy as it passes through. Highs at 10 to 14C.

 
 
 

Sunday 16/12/18
A southwest flow affects the whole of the UK and Ireland on Sunday. Low pressure is to the west of Scotland. Showers affecting western parts of the country but brighter in the east. The showers may turn to more persistent rain in the west as the day progresses. Highs at 7 to 12C.

Monday 17/12/18
A complex area of low pressure to the west of Scotland on Monday. Rain clears east to be followed by sunny spells and scattered showers. Heavier showers in western Scotland. Temperatures at 7 to 12C.

Tuesday 18/12/18
Low pressure may dominate again through Tuesday. This brings unsettled weather with rain and showers, some of them heavy. It could be windy too. Some wintry showers on northern hills. Highs at 4 to 9C.
