Unsettled
Rain & wintry showers for many

Issued: 1000 Saturday 1st December 2018
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

An unsettled theme for this week's weather, feeling wet and wintry for many

The week ahead will see a mixture of weather as low pressure dominates bringing unsettled conditions through the end of the week. It will be wet and windy for most for a time with some areas seeing snow and wintry showers. By the weekend however it will start to feel rather cold as high pressure builds. This will lead to frosty, foggy mornings but clear, bright afternoons. Feeling very cold by Saturday.

Tuesday 04/12/18
A ridge of high pressure briefly tries to build over the southern half of the country on Tuesday morning before a low pressure system moves in from the Atlantic. Early morning frost and fog is likely, particularly for the northern half of the country. Cloud and rain will build from the southwest as the low pressure system moves in, spreading across Ireland, Wales and much of England by the early evening. Snow and wintry showers possible for Scotland and over higher ground. Northern and eastern areas should stay dry but cloud will build through the afternoon. High temperatures will reach 4 to 8C in Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales and northeast England; 10 to 13C elsewhere.

Wednesday 05/12/18
An area of low pressure drifts across Britain on Wednesday bringing a cloudy and wet start to the day for many. The rain and cloud will start to clear from the west through the afternoon leaving some bright spells. Snow and wintry showers possible for much of Scotland and over higher ground. It will be a windy day with near gale force winds for southern areas. Temperature highs will reach 4 to 8C in Scotland and Northern Ireland; 10 to 13C for England and Wales.

Thursday 06/12/18
High pressure briefly builds over the southeast early on Thursday leading to clear skies, a touch of ground frost and a foggy start for this region however it is quickly pushed back over the continent as another Atlantic low pressure system moves in from the west. Rain will reach most areas by lunchtime but the main band should clear all areas but the far northeast by the evening. Windy again with near gale to gale force winds possible. Temperatures highs will reach 7 to 12C.

Friday 07/12/18
Remaining unsettled as low pressure lingers over the North Sea. Cloudy with further rain and showers, particularly for western areas. The best of any brightness will be over northern and central England. Staying windy for the northern half of the country with gale force winds possible. Temperature highs of 5 to 10C.

Saturday 08/12/18
High pressure builds to the west while low pressure remains to the east putting the British Isles in a cold, Arctic airflow. It should be a largely bright and dry day away from northern coasts where cloud will linger and there is the risk of wintry showers. Feeling cold in the northerly wind with highs of 4 to 9C.
