Dry, foggy
High pressure

Issued: 1000hrs Saturday 29th December 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Frost more common, sunnier than recently

An increasingly strong area of high pressure is expected to take up residence across the British Isles as we start 2019. Dry weather will prevail, and there should be more sunshine than during the Christmas period. However, there is a risk of widespread persistent fog, which may last several days. Overnight frost will become more common.

New Year's Day 01/01/19
High pressure stays in control. Variable cloud, some mist and fog patches, but also some sunnier spells. A weakening front slipping south across Scotland into northern England brings a zone of cloud and patchy rain or drizzle. A few showers for the Northern Isles. The best of any sunshine will be for southern England, perhaps also the far north of Scotland. Winds light west to northwesterly. Fairly mild at 7 to 11C.

Wednesday 02/01/19
Strong high pressure, exceeding 1040mb, is expected to lie across Britain and Ireland. Broadly dry weather with sunshine, variable cloud, and risk of stubborn low level fog patches. A chance of brief local showers around some south-eastern coasts, where a fresh northerly wind is possible. Light and variable winds. A risk of frost for some. Cooler than previous days, top temperatures 5 to 9C.

Thursday 03/01/19
High pressure shows little sign of movement. Extensively dry, with sunshine, variable low cloud and some persistent fog in low-lying districts. Light winds. Frost may be widespread in the morning with clear spells more widespread, but with a risk of freezing fog. Highs 4 to 8C, but staying near zero if fog lingers.

Friday 04/01/19
Little change, with high pressure dominant. Sunshine, fog and frost. Some places staying foggy all day. Little wind for most. A southerly breeze may bring more cloud to Ireland and western Scotland. Highs 3 to 7C.

Saturday 05/01/19
A chance of some rain moving in from the Atlantic to affect western Scotland. Most places staying quiet, with sun, frost and some fog. Milder west & south-west. Highs 4 to 10C.

Sunday 06/01/19
A weak front may pass eastwards, to bring cloud and patchy rain. A more mobile westerly pattern may be developing. Highs 5 to 9C.
