Murky Christmas?
Chilly Scotland

Issued: 0900 Thursday 20th December 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Murky Christmas, chilly in Scotland, milder in the south, then more unsettled again later

A wet couple of days ahead as low pressure brings fronts and some stronger winds to the UK and Ireland. However, a change takes place into Sunday as pressure starts to build. This leads us into a rather murky and damp Christmas in much of England, Wales and the whole of Ireland whilst Scotland will be froster and cold. Signs of this misty, murky weather lasting until the end of the week when indications are that more unsettled and milder weather returns.

Sunday 23/12/18
Low pressure southwest of Ireland on Sunday. Fronts pushing north bringing rain into much of Ireland, wales and England. The rain could be heavy at times. Drier in Scotland and cooler here with sunny spells. It stays wet through much of the afternoon across Wales, central and southern England and there is a risk of some localised flooding. Mild to the south. Cooler and drier in Scotland and the northern half of Ireland. Highs at 7C in Ireland and northern England, 11C in southern England and 4C in northern Scotland.

Christmas Eve
A cooler day seems likely for Christmas Eve. Fronts over southern Ireland and southern England bringing cloud and rain and drizzle here. It could be rather murky in northern England and Scotland, although some brighter spells developing as mist and fog patches clear. Highs at 4 to 7C for most, 12C in southwest England and the far south of Ireland.

Christmas Day
Indications are that higher pressure builds on Christmas Day. This may bring a rather murky day with a fair amount of cloud, mist and fog patches. These lift slowly to allow for some brighter spells. However, the emphasis is on cloud through the day. Temperatures around 4 to 8C.

Boxing Day
Pressure may well stay high through Boxing Day. There may be a fair amount of cloud together with cloud and outbreaks of drizzle. A few bright spells. Highs at 3 to 9C

Thursday 27/12/18
Pressure could be high to the east on Thursday. rather misty and murky with fog slow to clear. Further west it should be brighter although some drizzle may affect western Ireland. Highs at 4 to 10C.

Friday 28/12/18
Perhaps turning more unsettled on Friday as the southwest flow increases. A risk of rain, mostly in the west. Breezy too, this breeze clearing away much of the murk to the east. Highs at 6 to 12C.
