Issued: 1000 Friday 28th December 2018
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Grey and drizzly, mostly dry in the south, mild for all

High pressure remains in control of conditions across much of the UK and Ireland during the coming week. However, fronts will intrude from time to time bringing rain, most of it light and patchy and tending to be in northern and western areas. A fair amount of cloud for all parts. Tending to stay rather mild with the wind predominantly from the southwest.

New Year's Eve 31/12/18
High pressure is centred over southern England maintaining a mild, moist southwest to westerly airflow over the British Isles. It will be a rather overcast and murky day with some fog around though some sunshine will break through for the northeast of Scotland and southern and eastern parts of England. Some patchy light rain or drizzle for northwestern Scotland. Becoming breezy for Scotland. Highs at 7 to 11C.

New Year's Day 01/01/19
High pressure stays in control through New Year's Day. There will be variable cloud, some mist and fog patches, but also some sunnier spells. The highest chance of drizzle is along western coasts of Scotland and the Northern Isles. The best of any sunshine will be for eastern parts of England. Mild again at 7 to 11C.

Wednesday 02/01/19
As the position of the high pressure shifts slightly, the British Isles is affected by a more westerly flow leading to a cloudy, drizzly day for western areas and a drier and brighter day in the east. Some mist and fog around for central parts of England and Wales. Highs at 6 to 10C.

Thursday 03/01/19
A risk of a more unsettled day on Thursday as a weak low pressure system affects northern areas. This will bring light rain across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. It will be breezy for northwestern areas too. Drier in the south and east but likely to stay overcast. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Friday 04/01/19
The British Isles remain sandwiched between low pressure to the northwest and higher pressure to the southeast on Friday. There will be variable amounts of cloud around though it will be thickest in the west where there is a higher chance of drizzly rain. The best of the brightness in the southeast. High temperatures reaching 5 to 10C.

Saturday 05/01/19
Low pressure sinks southeastward through Saturday. It will be a cloudy day with a band of rain moving across the country. The heaviest rain for western Scotland and Northern Ireland and the best of the brightness in the southeast. Highs at 5 to 10C.
