Staying unsettled
Wet and windy at times

Issued: 1000 Monday 17th December 2018
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

The unsettled theme continues as low pressure becomes the dominant driving force behind the weather for the British Isles this week

It will be rather unsettled over the next few days as low pressure dominates the weather over the British Isles. It will feel mild at times with wet and windy conditions prevailing at times however the return of high pressure nearer Christmas signals the return of cooler, drier conditions.

Thursday 20/12/18
Low pressure is again in control through Thursday but the centre of the system moves to the north of Scotland and starts to fill. It will be another day of sunny spells and scattered showers. The heaviest showers will fall over northwestern Scotland and the Lake District while Ireland, North Wales and central and northern England will see the best of the brightness. Highs at 6 to 9C.

Friday 21/12/18
Low pressure continues to dominate bringing another day of sunshine and showers. It will be a cloudy and wet start to the day for all though this will break from the south to leave a drier and brighter afternoon away from western coasts where light rain or drizzle may persist through the afternoon. There is the potential for a band of very heavy rain impacting northern parts of England during the morning. It will be windy in the south. Highs at 5 to 11C.

Saturday 22/12/18
Low pressure moves off to the north while a weak high pressure ridge tries to build over the south. Saturday will see a mixture of sunny spells and showers for most of the country. The heaviest rain will be for northwestern Scotland and South Wales. Highs at 6 to 12C.

Sunday 23/12/18
A trough of low pressure extends over the northwest of the country. This will bring heavy rain to many areas and particularly heavy rain in a band extending across the north of England. Elsewhere it will be overcast and it will be windy in the south. Highs at 7 to 13C.

Monday 24/12/18
Monday sees low pressure moving off over Scandinavia putting the British Isles in a chillier northwesterly to northerly airflow. It will be cloudy with showers in the west, drier and brighter in the east. Highs slightly down on Sunday at 6 to 10C.

Tuesday 25/12/18
High pressure continues to build on Tuesday. This keeps the country in a cooler west to northwesterly air flow. It should be a mainly dry and bright day away from northwestern coasts which are exposed to the wind and could see persistent drizzle through the day. Highs falling slightly at 5 to 9C.
