Staying unsettled
Wet and windy at times

Issued: 1000 Sunday 16th December 2018
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

The unsettled theme continues as low pressure becomes the dominant driving force behind the weather for the British Isles this week

It will be rather unsettled over the next week as low pressure begins to influence the weather over the British Isles once more. It will feel less cold with wet and windy conditions prevailing at times.

Wednesday 19/12/18
An area of low pressure remains to the northwest of Scotland on Wednesday. It will be a bright and dry day for most areas away from western and southern coasts where there will be showers and prolonged spells of drizzle. It will also be a rather damp day for southeastern parts of England too. Winds will ease from Tuesday but will remain fresh in places. High temperatures at 5 to 9C.

Thursday 20/12/18
Low pressure is again in control through Thursday but the centre of the system moves to the north of Scotland and starts to fill. It will be another day of sunny spells and scattered showers. The heaviest showers will fall over northwestern Scotland and the Lake District while Ireland, North Wales and central and northern England will see the best of the brightness. Highs at 5 to 10C.

Friday 21/12/18
Low pressure continues to dominate bringing another day of sunshine and showers. It will be a cloudy and wet start to the day for all though this will break from the west to leave a drier and brighter afternoon away from western coasts where light rain or drizzle may persist through the afternoon. It will be windy in the north. Highs at 6 to 11C.

Saturday 22/12/18
Low pressure moves off to the north while a weak high pressure ridge tries to build over the south. Saturday will be rather cloudy but dry over the southern half of the country while the north will see a mixture of sunshine and showers. There will also be strong winds for northern areas. The heaviest rain will be for northwestern Scotland. Highs at 6 to 11C.

Sunday 23/12/18
A trough of low pressure extends over the northwest of the country. This will bring heavy rain to many areas and particularly heavy rain in a band extending across the north of England. Elsewhere it will be overcast and it will be very windy in the south. Highs at 6 to 11C.

Monday 24/12/18
Monday sees low pressure moving off over Scandinavia putting the British Isles in a chillier northwesterly to northerly airflow. It will be cloudy with showers in the west, drier and brighter in the east. Highs slightly down on Sunday at 4 to 9C.
