Rain and snow

A temporary ridge of high pressure and quiet weather in the middle of this week will be short lived as Atlantic weather systems come steaming back in by the weekend and beyond. Widespread gales or severe gales will develop, with spells of heavy rain and snowfalls possible at times, particularly in Scotland.

Friday 07/02/20
High pressure to the east and a trough of low pressure to the west promotes a freshening southerly wind across the British Isles. Dry for most of Britain all day, with broken cloud and sunshine, best in the east and northeast. Patchy rain coming in from the west, becoming more persistent into the evening in western areas. Highs 6 to 10C, mildest in southwest.

Saturday 08/02/20
A front passes eastward with a spell of rain overnight, clearing eastern counties into the morning. A few clusters of showers follow from the west, but there will be sunny spells too. A brisk southwesterly wind, will strengthen further into the evening and night as more rain comes in from the Atlantic. Highs 7 to 10C.

Sunday 09/02/20
A very windy day for all as a deep area of low pressure passes north of Britain. Risk of widespread gales, strongest gusts around exposed coasts in the west and north topping 70mph. Heavy rain passing eastwards, most prolonged over western hills. Driest toward the southeast of England. Mild air, reaching 10 to 13C.

Monday 10/02/20
Chillier air moves back in from the northwest and it stays very windy. Strong to gale force westerlies will drive frequent pulses of rain across Britain and Ireland. Snow over northern hills. Drier south and east. Highs 5 to 9C.

Tuesday 11/02/20
A threat of stormy winds for northern Britain as deep low pressure systems stay in charge to our north. Areas of heavy rain and snow, perhaps falling to low levels in Scotland. Mainly dry toward the East Midlands and southeast. Highs 4 to 8C.

Wednesday 12/02/20
A generally disturbed weather pattern continues, perhaps a deep low tracking directly across Britain by this time. Heavy rain, possible snow in the north. Gales, risk of severe gales transferring southwards. Highs 3 to 8C.
