Widespread gales and a risk of flooding, but less rain next week

A windy weekend with widespread severe gales bringing the risk of damage and flooding. Next week is likely to be cooler with a risk of some wintry showers in more northern and western areas. Generally next week is looking less unsettled and a gradual improvement may take place, especially in the south.

Sunday 16/2/20
Low pressure reamins northwest of Scotland on Sunday. Further periods of heavy rain in central and southern England as well as Wales. Windy with severe gales and a further risk of flooding in southern England. Drier and brighter in northern England and north Wales as well as much of Ireland, apart from showers in the west. Heavy and frequent wintry showers in western Scotland, drier in the east. Windy for all. Highs at 13C in southern England, 4 to 6C for most.


Monday 17/2/20
The area of low pressure is north east of Scotland on Monday. It should be a brighter day but remaining windy with gales n the north and west. Heavy and frequent showers across northern and western Scotland, northwest England and much of western Ireland, these falling as snow over the hills. Generally drier across more southern areas. Feeling cold everywhere in the wind. Highs at 5 to 8C.


Tuesday 18/2/20
Staying cool for all on Tuesday and feeling especially chilly in the wind. Further showers over western hills and coasts, these falling as sleet and snow. Fewer showers inland, again these falling as sleet or snow. Staying dry and sunny in the east. Highs at 5 to 8C.
 


Wednesday 19/2/20
A ridge of high-pressure builds on Wednesday. The day should be dry with some good spells of sunshine although some low cloud and drizzle could affect western Ireland and western Scotland. Less chilly. Highs at 6 to 10C.


Thursday 20/2/20
A front spreads eastwards on Thursday bringing periods of rain. Most of this in Wales, northern England and Scotland, but more showery rain further south. Becoming brighter in Ireland and western parts of the UK later. Highs at 8 to 10C.

Friday 21/2/20
Broken cloud and some bright or sunny spells in southern areas of the country on Friday. Brighter for northern England and eastern Scotland. Drizzle and cloud may affect western Scotland as well as the west and north of Ireland. Highs at 6 to 9C.
