Mild south, cool north

A general west to southwesterly weather pattern will continue during the week ahead. Periods of rain or showers coming in frequently from the Atlantic, sometimes snow on the hills. Some marked temperature contrasts from north to south, with very mild temperatures at times for England & Wales.

Thursday 20/02/20
A trough of low pressure passes eastward across the country, with fronts bringing rainfall to many areas through the day. Heaviest rain in the west in the morning will tend to fade to leave showery conditions, these of hail, or snow on the mountains. Least rain in the southeast. Brisk winds from the south then west, gusting gale force around exposed coasts for a time. Highs 7 to 10C.


Friday 21/02/20
Further Atlantic fronts sweep into the west & northwest of the British Isles, with rain setting in again, heaviest across Scotland and Ireland, extending to northwest England and Wales through the day. Largely dry toward the southeast of England. A strong southwesterly wind, gales around north & western coasts. Mild in the south, cooler north, highs ranging from 5 to 13C.


Saturday 22/02/20
North to south temperature contrasts continue, with a mix of showers or some longer periods of rain in the north and west. Some snow over hills. Drier and brighter in the south and east. Breezy, and feeling cool in the north. Highs 5 to 8C north & west, up to 10 to 13C for the Midlands, south & southeast England.
 


Sunday 23/02/20
Detail is uncertain, but another batch of rain is expected to pass west to east across the northern half of the country. Heavy for several hours for western hills. Brisk westerly winds. Cool in the north with hill snow for Scotland, 4 to 7C. Mild in the south, and largely dry for southern England, highs 11 to 14C.

Monday 24/02/20
Low pressure stays nearby, with further rain or showers, focused on the north & west. Wintry in the north, with a spell of hill snow, perhaps to quite low levels. Much milder again in the south, highs 10 to 13C.

Tuesday 25/02/20
A general westerly pattern prevails. Areas of showery rain in the west. Possible snow in northern Scotland if winds turn northwesterly for a time. Drier toward the east and south of England. Highs 4 to 11C, warmest south.
