Rain, sleet & snow
Flooding risk

Issued: 0900 Monday 24th March 2020
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Chilly compared to the winter so far, rain, sleet and snow for all

A distinctly wintry appearance to the weather for the coming week. Whilst not desperately cold it will be chilly when compared to the weather we have got used to through this winter so far. There is the threat of snow showers especially over northern and western areas, with a growing risk of more persistent rain sleet and snow this weekend which could lead to some further flooding problems.

Thursday 27/2/20
A ridge of high-pressure building on Thursday should allow for a mostly dry day across much of the UK and Ireland. Snow showers will affect northern and western Scotland, with a few over western coasts of Ireland too. Thicker cloud and some outbreaks of rain and sleet may affect the far southern coasts of England although there is much uncertainty in this. Highs near 3 to 6C.

Friday 28/2/20
Fronts bringing a damper day on Friday with cloud and outbreaks of rain across many areas. The rain could be preceded by some sleet and west snow in eastern England, the threat of more persistent snow over the hills of Scotland for a time. Rain could turn heavy in the south. Highs at 3 to 10C.

Saturday 29/2/20
A deep area of low pressure is expected to cross the country on Saturday. Details are still uncertain but there may be a period of heavy rain for many, with snow affecting central and northern areas. A risk of flooding. Winds may be to gale force. Feeling cold throughout the day. Highs at 2 to 7C.

Sunday 1/3/20
Another chilly day on Sunday. Sunny spells across much of England and Wales although there will be some showers affecting western coast and hills. More persistent sleet with some snow over high ground in Scotland. Wintry showers for western Ireland but dry in the east. Breezy again. Highs at 3 to 7C.

Monday 2/3/20
Low pressure is in control again for Monday. This brings sunny spells and some wintry showers, most of them affecting western coasts and hills. Highs at 4 to 7C.

Tuesday 3/2/20
Confidence is low in the forecast for Tuesday, but at the present time we expect a bright day and a mostly dry one with some sunny spells. Wintry showers may affect northern and western Scotland. Tops near 3 to 7C.
