Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Risk of fog

Staying chilly through to the weekend as northerly air influences the country. Changes develop as fronts come in from the west, bringing gradually milder air, soonest in the west and northwest. Quiet weather patterns are likely next week with high pressure nearby, possibly staying murky and rather cool in central areas.

Friday 20/1/23
Fairly high pressure over Britain leads to mainly dry conditions. Mostly light winds. Variable cloud, some fog and areas of sunshine. Fronts located to the west bring cloud and rain to Ireland, fringing into west and southwestern England and Wales, perhaps becoming generally damp here but slightly milder. Possible sleet or snow on the leading edge of this in the hills. A frosty start leading to a cool day for most. Highs 3 to 8C, mildest toward the southwest.

Saturday 21/1/23
A slack pressure pattern is due to exist with winds remaining light for much of the country. A lot of cloud, some fog patches, local areas of sunshine. Stronger south to southwesterly winds for Northern Ireland and Scotland bring milder conditions here, plus drizzly rain. Drier for eastern Scotland. Highs 4 to 10C, mildest in west, coolest in central and southeastern areas if it stays murky.

Sunday 22/1/23
High pressure over south and eastern England keeps things mainly dry but still on the cool side here. A risk of fog. Southwesterly breezes in the north and west bring mild but damp conditions with low cloud, patchy rain and drizzle for Ireland, western Scotland and perhaps west coasts of England & Wales. Highs 4 to 10C.

Monday 23/1/23
Continued fairly high pressure and perhaps quite stagnant conditions in the south. A lot of cloud, some lingering fog possible. North and western areas likely to continue damp with a southwesterly airflow. Highs 5 to 12C, coolest if in fog.

Tuesday 24/1/23
High pressure stays nearby, with quiet weather conditions expected. Fog patches and areas of cloud. Some drizzle in northwest. Highs 5 to 12C, mildest west and northwest.

Wednesday 25/1/23
Fairly quiet weather patterns are expected to continue. Some patchy rain or drizzle, with a lot of cloud and a risk of fog. Highs 5 to 12C, again staying cool if it stays murky.
