Gales and rain
Cooler next week?

Issued: 0900 Monday 2nd January 2023
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Wet and windy, a risk of gales at times with a risk of snow over Scottish hills

The unsettled weather continues this week. With the jet stream over or just south of the British Isles there will be low pressure areas passing through the country. These bring cloud, wind and rain, some gales in places too. A risk of sleet and snow over the hills of Scotland. A tendency for temperatures to be a little cooler next week.

Thursday 5/1/23
A bright start to Thursday in Scotland and much of northern England. Cloud increasing in the south and west bringing outbreaks of rain and also some drizzle along coasts and hills in the south and west. Brighter and colder for northern Scotland. Becoming windier in England and Wales. Highs at 12C in southern England, 4 to 7C across much of Scotland, northern England and Ireland.

Friday 6/1/23
A ridge of higher pressure builds on Friday bringing a drier, bright and cooler day for most. Eastern coasts may have some showers, and a few could affect coasts of Wales. Sunny spells. Rain and strong winds return to Ireland in the evening, with drizzle and cloudier weather for southwest and southern coasts of England in the evening too. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Saturday 7/1/23
Wet and windy weather sweeps in from the west on Saturday. Fronts passing east taking heavy periods of rain with them. Brighter, blustery conditions following the rain from the west, some heavy showers on western coasts and hills, some of them wintry. Highs at 4 to 12C, turning cooler later as the rain clears.

Sunday 8/1/23
Brighter through Sunday but staying windy in the south. Some showers over western coasts and hills whilst being drier in the east. The showers may be heavy in the west with a risk of hail and thunder as well as a risk of merging to longer spells of rain. The showers falling as snow over the hills of Scotland and northern England. Tops near 4 to 9C.

Monday 9/1/23
