Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Dry and warm this week, cooler and more mixed next week

High pressure is expected to be building into the country through the remainder of this week. This will be bringing lots of sunshine for many as well as increasingly warm temperatures. Next week is likely to be turning more mixed and cooler as the high pressure moves away to the ast and low pressure takes control.

Friday 20/9/19
The area of high pressure is expected to slip to the east of the UK on Friday. This allows for a brisk south to southeast wind to develop. There may be some cloud in eastern areas at first, but this breaking. Most places will then be dry, warm and sunny. Some cloud in western Ireland and the far west of Scotland. Highs near 23C in the south and east, 21C in Ireland, 18C in the far west of Scotland.

Saturday 21/9/19
High pressure stays east on Saturday with low pressure to the west. A south to southeast breeze will be blowing bringing warm air to all. Sunny in the east. Weak fronts in the west of the UK and Ireland will be giving a threat of some thundery showers here, with more persistent rain in western Ireland. Highs at 26C in southeast England, 21C in Ireland and 23C in Scotland.

Sunday 22/9/19
Fronts track east through Ireland and the UK on Sunday. These bring a band of cloud and rain with them, the rain showery to the south. Brighter, fresher weather with some showers follow from the west. Less breezy with highs at 15C in Ireland and Scotland, 17C in Wales and 21C in eastern England.

Monday 23/9/19
A weak ridge of high pressure in southern and eastern areas brings a fair start to Monday. However, low pressure to the south of Iceland will be driving fronts eastwards, and these will be bringing rain into Ireland and the west of the UK, some of it heavy. The rain spreads east during the day. Winds increasing too. Highs near 14 to 20C.

Tuesday 24/9/19
A brighter day with sunny spells for many parts of England and Wales as well as eastern Scotland. Rain in western Scotland and Northern Ireland with stronger winds here too. Tops at 14 to 21C.

Wednesday 25/9/19
Probably an unsettled day with wind and rain. The rain heaviest in Scotland, Ireland and northern England. Turning cooler from the north and west. Highs at 12 to 21C.
