Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Becoming fresher through the week

A dry and warm weekend lies ahead for most of the country, as high pressure dominates. Temperatures climbing above 30C in the south. Heat and humidity is likely to breakdown into areas of thunderstorms into next week, although detail is very uncertain. Eventually, fresher conditions are likely to return from the west.

Sunday 05/08/18
High pressure resides across central and southern Britain, resulting in a fair and warm day for most places. Lots of sunshine. Fronts over the Atlantic encroach toward the north-west, with skies clouding over, and patchy rain developing later for western Scotland and the north-west of Ireland. Southwesterly winds will freshen here too, otherwise light winds and coastal sea breezes. Temperatures ranging from 17C in western Scotland, to 30C in south-east England.

Monday 06/08/18
High pressure weakens across southern areas, but should maintain a dry and very warm day for central-southern England and Wales with light winds. Sunshine becoming hazy. Fronts slipping southwards across Scotland and Ireland bring cloudy skies and patchy rain, most persistent toward the west, accompanied by a fresh southwesterly breeze. Feeling humid, 17 to 22C north, 25 to 30C Midlands and south, locally 32C in the south-east.

Tuesday 07/08/18
Low confidence of detail. Slack low pressure is expected to develop across the British Isles. A humid atmosphere is likely to destabilise into areas of thundery rain. Light winds mean some places could see prolonged downpours, whilst others stay dry. Fairly cloudy, with some hazy sun. Likely very warm and muggy in the south-east, but fresher toward the north-west. Highs 17 to 20C Scotland & Ireland, 23 to 30C England & Wales, warmest south-east.

Wednesday 08/08/18
Continued low confidence. A threat of thundery rain being slow-moving in places, giving rain for many hours locally. Some hazy sun. Temperatures tending to lower, but still quite humid. Highs 19 to 26C.

Thursday 09/08/18
A fresher situation is likely with Atlantic air moving back across Britain. Residual rain or a few showers, but probably becoming dry for many. Highs 17 to 24C.

Friday 10/08/18
A general westerly airflow. Patchy rain in the north-west, but largely dry south & east. Some sunshine. Light winds. Highs 17 to 23C.
