Issued: 1000hrs Sunday 12th August 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Some humid days south

An ongoing west to southwesterly weather pattern brings periods of wind and rain in from the Atlantic during this week. The most prolonged rain will affect north-western parts of Britain and Ireland, whilst central and south-eastern areas will be often dry. Temperatures varied, occasionally warm humid, but generally cool in the north-west. By the weekend, temperatures may lift more widely.

Wednesday 15/08/18
Slow moving fronts affect north-western areas, bringing heavy rain to western Scotland and Ireland, extending to Cumbria. Rain or drizzle for west Wales. The south-west may be also grey and damp. Patchy rain spilling east across northern Britain, advancing south-eastwards later. The Midlands, south & south-east should escape dry with a little sun. A brisk southwesterly wind, strongest around the Irish Sea. Just 15 to 18C or cooler north & west, but up to 25 to 28C south-east.

Thursday 16/08/18
A cold front passes south-east across Britain overnight and into early Thursday (timing uncertain). Rain for a few hours, some heavy showery bursts with possible thunder. Sunny spells coming through, but further frequent showers are expected in the west & north-west. Brisk west to southwesterly winds, gusty as the front moves through. Fresher air extends to all areas, highs 18 to 23C, warmest south-east. Cooler in western Scotland, nearer 15C.

Friday 17/08/18
An ongoing showery westerly pattern is likely. Bursts of rain most frequent toward the north, these tracking eastwards through the day. Sunny spells away from showers, best in eastern areas in the morning. Central and southern Britain may escape largely dry. A fresh breeze. Highs 17 to 22C, locally perhaps warmer in the far south-east. Cooler western Scotland.

Saturday 18/08/18
A generally unsettled westerly pattern continues. Frontal rain is expected to affect the north & west, perhaps extending more widely across the country. Breezy for all. Staying cool north, warmer far south, highs 16 to 25C.

Sunday 19/08/18
Fronts continue to pass from west to east, timing uncertain. A chance that pressure begins to build from the south, pushing most rain toward north-west Scotland. Sunniest south & east. Highs 16 to 20C north, reaching 24 to 28C south.

Monday 20/08/18
A risk of rain still affecting some areas, most likely toward the north. Drier and brighter south, and temperatures rising. Feeling humid, highs 18 to 23C north, 25 to 30C south.
