Wet and windy weekend
Cooler than recent weeks

Issued: 1000hrs Monday 6th August 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Staying mixed into mid-August

A change to a fresher Atlantic weather pattern develops through midweek, bringing sunshine and showers, locally heavy and thundery. Toward the weekend, low pressure moving in from the south-west threatens to bring wet and windy weather for all.

Thursday 09/08/18
Troughs passing eastwards will produce periods of showers throughout the day, merging into longer periods of rain for north-western areas, but may be frequent elsewhere for a few hours. Heavy bursts for some, especially northern areas. A chance of thunderstorms over the continent grazing the far south-east. Otherwise, driest along the south coast. Occasional sunshine. A fresh west to southwesterly breeze. Coolest in western Scotland. Highs 16 to 24C.

Friday 10/08/18
Showers focused toward the west & north-west, but few elsewhere, and many places may be dry much of the day. Sunny spells, becoming cloudier through the day. Fronts will move in from the south-west (timing uncertain), with rain arriving and setting in later for southern Ireland and south-western Britain. Winds strengthening too. Highs 18 to 25C, warmest eastern England.

Saturday 11/08/18
Precise detail uncertain, but indications favour an unsettled picture, with low pressure in charge. An Atlantic low is expected to move slowly eastwards, bringing a threat of rain for many hours. Central and southern Britain may well take the most prolonged rainfall, but heavy falls are likely over western hills too. Blustery winds. Highs 16 to 23C.

Sunday 12/08/18
Staying unsetted, with areas of persistent rain or heavy showers. Low pressure is likely to revolve slowly across Britain, so belts of rain are likely to encircle the country. Some brighter periods. Cool and blustery. Highs 15 to 22C.

Monday 13/08/18
Low pressure moves away toward the continent but leaves a cool and showery picture across Britain and Ireland. Some frequent rain, but also sunny spells. Highs 15 to 23C.

Tuesday 14/08/18
A mixed outlook, but showers probably becoming fewer. A small risk of further rain moving back in from the west, but confidence is low. Highs 16 to 24C.
