Issued: 1000hrs Thursday 9th August 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Becoming warmer again south

Weather systems coming in from the Atlantic will maintain a changeable theme during mid-August. Some persistent rain or heavy showers. The wettest weather often focused toward the north-west of Britain, where it will be quite cool. The south & south-east is expected to become warmer and more humid through the week.

Sunday 12/08/18
A complex frontal system trails north-eastwards across Britain as low pressure moves slowly east. Heavy and persistent rain, likely wettest in western areas. Broadly cloudy skies, perhaps a little sun toward the east away from rain. A slow improvement coming through from the west, with brightening skies but clusters of showers following the main zone of rain. Blustery winds. Highs 17 to 23C, cooler in rain, but locally up to 25C south-east.

Monday 13/08/18
Confidence of precise detail is low. The remnants of Sunday's weather system is still likely to interfere with things on Monday. Areas of showery rain, which in places could merge into rain for a few hours, perhaps focused toward the east & north-east. Some parts of the country may escape mainly dry, with cloud breaking to give sunny spells. Winds fairly light. Temperatures 15C or below in rain, but highs up to 19 to 23C or locally warmer south.

Tuesday 14/08/18
Another frontal system is likely to move across northern regions of Britain and Ireland, bringing a threat of further rain. Scattered showers elsewhere, but many central and southern regions should be dry and bright much of the day. A west to south-westerly breeze, strongest in the north. Highs 16 to 19C north, 20 to 24C south, warmest south-east.

Wednesday 15/08/18
A mixed west to south-westerly pattern is expected, with rain at times in the west & north, possibly setting in for a few hours. Drier and brighter toward the east, with occasional rain developing. Breezy. Warming up in the south. Highs 17 to 26C.

Thursday 16/08/18
Most likely staying changeable, with rain focused toward the north & west, but may spread into central areas. Largely dry south, where increasingly warm and humid. Highs 16 to 19C north, 23 to 28C south.

Friday 17/08/18
Probably little overall change, with rain or showers north & west, but mostly dry weather south & east. Temperatures ranging from 16 to 27C.
